What it actually does

Confused deputy in initializeFromParcelLocked of BaseBundle.java permits arbitrary code execution during parcel deserialization, enabling local privilege escalation without additional permissions or user interaction on Android.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers with an existing foothold on Android devices can silently obtain full control, exposing user data, installed apps, and device integrity across the Android ecosystem; the issue remains unpatched in listed versions and has shown slight EPSS growth over 30 days.

How an attack unfolds

A malicious application on the device crafts a specially formed Bundle parcel that, when deserialized by a system component, causes the confused deputy to execute attacker-controlled code, resulting in privilege escalation to system level.

How to fix it

Apply the latest Android security patch that resolves A-240138318; monitor Google security bulletins for Android-13 fixes and deploy over-the-air updates to all affected devices as soon as available.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify device is running a patched Android build containing the fix for A-240138318; confirm BaseBundle.java no longer contains the vulnerable initializeFromParcelLocked logic via source inspection or binary diff of system frameworks.

Typical attack path

  1. Deploy a malicious application to the target Android device via sideloading or compromised store.
  2. Trigger the vulnerable BaseBundle parcel deserialization path from the malicious app.
  3. Exploit the confused deputy to execute arbitrary code and escalate privileges.
  4. Perform post-exploitation actions such as data exfiltration or persistence.

How to detect it

Examine Android logs and app behavior for anomalous parcel handling or unexpected privilege changes originating from untrusted apps; correlate with system_server or framework crashes involving BaseBundle.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize deployment of Android security updates to all managed devices within the next patch cycle.
  • Review enterprise mobile device management policies to enforce timely OS updates.
  • Monitor threat intelligence feeds for any future exploit maturity or in-the-wild reports of this issue.

The record

In initializeFromParcelLocked of BaseBundle.java, there is a possible method arbitrary code execution due to a confused deputy. This could lead to local escalation of privilege with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation.Product: AndroidVersions: Android-13Android ID: A-240138318
