What it actually does
Use-after-free in io_identity_cow within the io_uring subsystem allows an attacker with system-level privileges to corrupt kernel memory structures, leading to arbitrary read/write primitives and full privilege escalation.
Why it matters to the business
Devices running the affected Android kernel versions face elevated risk of complete system compromise by local attackers who already possess system execution rights, potentially exposing all user data and enabling persistent control; the issue has been public for years with low but slowly rising exploit probability.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with existing system privileges crafts a sequence of io_uring operations that triggers a use-after-free condition in io_identity_cow, reclaims the freed memory with attacker-controlled data, and leverages the resulting corruption to overwrite kernel credentials or function pointers for root access.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream kernel patch referenced by Android ID A-238177383 or any vendor-supplied kernel update that resolves the io_identity_cow use-after-free; where updates are unavailable, restrict untrusted code from obtaining system privileges and consider disabling io_uring via kernel configuration where feasible.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the presence of the patched io_uring.c code by inspecting the kernel source or binary for the corrected io_identity_cow function; run targeted kernel fuzzing or static analysis tools against the io_uring subsystem to verify absence of the original use-after-free pattern.
Typical attack path
- Obtain system execution privileges on the target Android device
- Invoke io_uring syscalls to allocate and free identity structures
- Trigger the use-after-free window through concurrent or malformed operations
- Reclaim freed memory and corrupt kernel objects
- Escalate to full system/root privileges and install persistence
How to detect it
Review kernel logs and audit trails for anomalous io_uring activity or crashes involving memory corruption; look for unexpected privilege changes or process behavior originating from system-context processes after io_uring usage.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all Android devices that receive security patches
- Audit custom or carrier kernels for the presence of the vulnerable io_identity_cow implementation
- Monitor EPSS trend and any new exploit publications given the four-year public disclosure window
- Limit system-privileged applications and review SELinux policies that govern io_uring access
The record
In io_identity_cow of io_uring.c, there is a possible way to corrupt memory due to a use after free. This could lead to local escalation of privilege with System execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation.Product: AndroidVersions: Android kernelAndroid ID: A-238177383References: Upstream kernel
