What it actually does
Local use-after-free in io_uring request handling causes kernel memory corruption that can be turned into arbitrary read/write and privilege escalation.
Why it matters to the business
An attacker who already has a local shell on an unpatched Linux system can obtain root privileges, install persistent malware, and access or destroy all data on the host.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local code execution permission builds a sequence of io_uring submission-queue entries that deliberately race with kernel cleanup paths, triggering the use-after-free and converting the resulting memory corruption into a kernel read/write primitive for privilege escalation.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version that contains the io_uring use-after-free fix; if an immediate update is impossible, restrict untrusted local users from executing code and consider disabling io_uring via the io_uring_setup system call or kernel configuration.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel version contains the upstream io_uring fix; run a local privilege-escalation test binary in a non-production environment and confirm it no longer succeeds; monitor kernel logs for use-after-free warnings during io_uring activity.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local shell or executable permission on target Linux host
- Map and submit a crafted chain of io_uring requests that trigger the UAF condition
- Leverage resulting kernel memory corruption to obtain arbitrary read/write
- Escalate to root by overwriting credentials or hijacking kernel function pointers
- Install persistence or move laterally within the compromised system
How to detect it
Search kernel audit logs and dmesg for io_uring related warnings or use-after-free stack traces; inspect process creation events immediately following io_uring activity for unexpected privilege changes; review any post-exploitation artifacts such as new root-owned processes or modified kernel modules.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all internet-facing or multi-tenant Linux systems within the next patch cycle
- Inventory workloads that rely on io_uring and test the fix in staging before broad deployment
- Apply least-privilege controls so that only trusted users can execute arbitrary code on kernel hosts
- Enable kernel hardening features such as lockdown mode or SELinux enforcing where feasible
The record
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel’s implementation of IO-URING. This flaw allows an attacker with local executable permission to create a string of requests that can cause a use-after-free flaw within the kernel. This issue leads to memory corruption and possible privilege escalation.
