What it actually does
Out-of-bounds read in the io_uring io_read() path triggered by specially crafted parameters, allowing a local process to read kernel memory beyond intended bounds.
Why it matters to the business
Local users on affected Linux systems can leak sensitive kernel memory, increasing risk of information disclosure and follow-on attacks; widespread kernel deployment means broad exposure until patched.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access invokes io_uring with crafted parameters that reach io_read(), causing the kernel to read past allocated buffers and return the contents to user space.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 89c2b3b74918200e46699338d7bcc19b1ea12110 or later; rebuild and reboot with the updated kernel image.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit 89c2b3b74918200e46699338d7bcc19b1ea12110 by inspecting /proc/version or kernel source; test io_uring read operations no longer return out-of-bounds data.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local shell or process execution on a vulnerable Linux host
- Invoke io_uring setup and submission with malicious read parameters
- Trigger the out-of-bounds read via io_read()
- Capture and parse leaked kernel memory for useful data such as pointers or credentials
How to detect it
Review kernel audit logs and dmesg for io_uring-related faults or unusual read lengths; inspect process activity using io_uring syscalls around the time of suspected incidents.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all internet-facing and multi-tenant systems
- Disable io_uring where not required via kernel command-line or seccomp filters
- Monitor audit logs for unusual io_uring syscall patterns
The record
An out-of-bounds read flaw was found in the Linux kernel’s io_uring module in the way a user triggers the io_read() function with some special parameters. This flaw allows a local user to read some memory out of bounds.
