What it actually does

Use-after-free in QEMU paravirtual RDMA device allows a guest driver to issue hardware commands before shared buffers are allocated, resulting in memory corruption that can be leveraged for arbitrary code execution within the QEMU process.

Why it matters to the business

Successful exploitation can allow a compromised guest virtual machine to escape to the hypervisor, potentially leading to loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability across all hosted workloads on the affected host.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access inside a guest VM loads a malicious paravirtual RDMA driver that deliberately sends hardware commands prior to buffer allocation; the resulting use-after-free condition is then abused to corrupt QEMU memory and achieve code execution outside the guest boundary.

How to fix it

Upgrade QEMU to a version containing the fix for the paravirtual RDMA device that enforces buffer allocation checks before command processing; disable the RDMA device for untrusted guests until patches can be applied.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed QEMU build includes the buffer-allocation guard for the paravirtual RDMA device and test that a guest can no longer trigger the command path without allocated buffers.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain code execution inside a guest VM
  2. Load a crafted paravirtual RDMA driver
  3. Issue hardware commands before shared buffers are allocated
  4. Trigger and weaponize the use-after-free condition
  5. Escalate to hypervisor-level code execution

How to detect it

Review QEMU process logs and guest driver activity for RDMA command submissions that occur before buffer allocation; correlate with hypervisor memory error or crash reports indicating use-after-free patterns.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching QEMU on all hosts exposing the paravirtual RDMA device
  • Apply least-privilege guest configurations and disable RDMA passthrough where not required
  • Monitor QEMU process memory and RDMA-related error logs for anomalous behavior
  • Restrict untrusted workloads to hardened QEMU builds until remediation is complete

The record

A flaw was found in the QEMU implementation of VMWare's paravirtual RDMA device. This flaw allows a crafted guest driver to execute HW commands when shared buffers are not yet allocated, potentially leading to a use-after-free condition.
