What it actually does
The flaw prevents proper re-dirtying of freed tree-log nodes when walking up a tree-log tree whose depth is two or greater on zoned btrfs volumes, leaving a write hole that triggers an -EAGAIN transaction abort during commit.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using btrfs on zoned storage can experience sudden forced read-only mounts and aborted transactions under sustained I/O workloads, leading to application failures, potential data unavailability, and unplanned downtime.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker or workload triggers repeated large sequential reads against a multi-device btrfs filesystem on zoned media; the kernel fails to mark higher-level tree-log nodes dirty on tree ascent, resulting in an incomplete write that aborts the transaction and remounts the volume read-only.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream btrfs fix that correctly re-dirties tree-log nodes on ascent; update to a kernel containing commit "btrfs: fix re-dirty process of tree-log nodes" or any later stable release that includes it.
How to confirm the fix worked
After patching, reproduce the original fio workload on zoned btrfs; confirm that no transaction abort with errno=-11 occurs and that the filesystem remains writable throughout the test.
Typical attack path
- Mount btrfs volumes on zoned block devices with single data and metadata profiles.
- Drop caches and run sustained large-block read workloads across multiple mount points.
- Trigger tree-log operations that allocate and later free nodes at depth two or higher.
- Observe the kernel commit path encountering the write hole and aborting with -EAGAIN.
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for BTRFS error messages referencing btrfs_commit_transaction with errno=-11, forced read-only transitions, and warnings about skipping aborted transactions on devices using the btrfs driver.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching kernel packages on any host using btrfs with zoned NVMe or similar devices.
- Add monitoring for btrfs transaction abort messages containing errno=-11.
- Consider disabling tree-logging or switching to non-zoned storage for high-I/O workloads until patched.

For zoned btrfs, we re-dirty a freed tree node to ensure btrfs can write the region and does not leave a hole on write on a zoned device. The current code fails to re-dirty a node when the tree-log tree's depth is greater or equal to 2. That leads to a transaction abort with -EAGAIN. Fix the issue by properly re-dirtying a node on walking up the tree.
