On certain processors the computer can crash while starting up because instructions that were just changed are still seen as old instructions.

What it actually does
Race condition during early ftrace text patching on RISC-V leaves the current CPU's instruction cache unsynchronized, so execution of newly patched code fetches stale instructions and triggers an illegal-instruction fault.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using the affected RISC-V kernel may panic on boot and fail to start, causing downtime for any workload that depends on those machines.
How an attack unfolds
The flaw is exercised automatically during kernel initialization when ftrace walks and patches functions; no attacker action is required beyond booting an unpatched kernel on the vulnerable hardware.
How to fix it
Upgrade to a Linux kernel that contains the fix for the icache flush ordering (post-5.13 series commits that flush the local CPU icache before the remote fence).
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel version contains the upstream commit that adds the local icache flush before sbi_remote_fence_i; attempt a boot with ftrace enabled and verify no illegal-instruction panic occurs.
Typical attack path
- Boot unpatched RISC-V kernel with ftrace enabled
- ftrace_init walks patch sites and calls patch_text_nosync
- patch_text_nosync updates instructions then calls flush_icache_all
- flush_icache_all issues remote fence without first flushing local icache
- Execution continues into the just-patched function and fetches stale opcodes
- Illegal-instruction trap in idle task forces kernel panic
How to detect it
Inspect early boot logs on RISC-V systems for the exact oops string referencing riscv_cpuid_to_hartid_mask and illegal instruction during ftrace_init.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all RISC-V boot targets
- Test patched kernels in a lab environment that matches production hardware before rollout
- Monitor boot logs for ftrace-related oops until systems are updated

[ 0.000000] ---[ end Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill the idle task! ]--- While ftrace is looping over a list of addresses to patch, it always failed when patching the same function: riscv_cpuid_to_hartid_mask. Looking at the backtrace, the illegal instruction is encountered in this same function. However, patch_text_nosync, after patching the instructions, calls flush_icache_range. But looking at what happens in this function: flush_icache_range -> flush_icache_all -> sbi_remote_fence_i -> __sbi_rfence_v02 -> riscv_cpuid_to_hartid_mask The icache and dcache of the current cpu are never synchronized between the patching of riscv_cpuid_to_hartid_mask and calling this same function. So fix this by flushing the current cpu's icache before asking for the other cpus to do the same.
