What it actually does
Out-of-bounds read of size 4 on the global barrier_pkt array inside tmc_update_etf_buffer() because a bounds check present in etb_update_buffer() was omitted, allowing KASAN-detected access past the end of the array during coresight TMC-ETF buffer handling.
Why it matters to the business
May produce kernel crashes or limited memory disclosure on ARM systems that use CoreSight tracing and perf, increasing operational risk and potential downtime for workloads that rely on performance monitoring.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local execution rights triggers perf event scheduling combined with binary loading; the resulting call to tmc_update_etf_buffer() performs an unchecked read of barrier_pkt, surfacing as a KASAN global-out-of-bounds fault during the exec path.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream fix that adds the barrier_pkt size check to tmc_update_etf_buffer() before any kernel update or distribution backport that resolves the out-of-bounds access.
How to confirm the fix worked
Boot a patched kernel with KASAN enabled, reproduce the perf/ETF event sequence, and confirm the absence of the KASAN report for barrier_pkt; also verify the presence of the size-check commit in the kernel source.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local unprivileged access on an affected ARM Linux system
- Configure ETM/ETF perf events that exercise tmc_update_etf_buffer
- Force process execution or scheduling events that reach the vulnerable buffer update
- Trigger the missing bounds check and read past barrier_pkt
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for KASAN reports containing tmc_update_etf_buffer, barrier_pkt, and global-out-of-bounds; correlate with perf event activity and execve calls.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on ARM systems that enable CoreSight and perf
- Temporarily restrict unprivileged perf_event_paranoid settings if patching is delayed
- Monitor kernel logs for KASAN reports referencing tmc_update_etf_buffer
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: coresight: tmc-etf: Fix global-out-of-bounds in tmc_update_etf_buffer() commit 6f755e85c332 ("coresight: Add helper for inserting synchronization packets") removed trailing '\0' from barrier_pkt array and updated the call sites like etb_update_buffer() to have proper checks for barrier_pkt size before read but missed updating tmc_update_etf_buffer() which still reads barrier_pkt past the array size resulting in KASAN out-of-bounds bug. Fix this by adding a check for barrier_pkt size before accessing like it is done in etb_update_buffer().
