What it actually does
The flaw causes a NULL pointer dereference inside kthread_stop() because scsi_host_dev_release() calls it whenever shost->ehandler is non-NULL, yet the allocation path sets the field to ERR_PTR(-ENOMEM) instead of NULL when the error-handler kthread fails to spawn.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using affected SCSI drivers may experience kernel crashes and abrupt reboots during device initialization or driver load, resulting in unplanned downtime and loss of storage availability.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker or automated process triggers SCSI host allocation under memory pressure or driver-specific failure conditions so that the error-handler kthread cannot be created; later, when the partially-initialized host is released, the cleanup path unconditionally invokes kthread_stop on the invalid pointer, producing a kernel oops.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream fix that explicitly sets shost->ehandler to NULL on kthread creation failure; boot a patched kernel (any mainline or distribution release containing commit 66a834d09293 and the subsequent correction) before exposing SCSI devices.
How to confirm the fix worked
Boot the updated kernel, attempt SCSI host allocation under the same failure conditions that previously triggered the oops, and confirm that the "error handler thread failed to spawn" message no longer leads to a NULL dereference crash.
Typical attack path
- Initiate SCSI host allocation via a driver probe or module load
- Force the error-handler kthread creation to fail (ENOMEM)
- Trigger device release path (put_device / kobject_release)
- Execute kthread_stop on the ERR_PTR value
- Kernel dereferences invalid address and panics
How to detect it
Search kernel logs, dmesg, and crash dumps for the exact spawn-failure string followed immediately by a NULL-pointer oops in kthread_stop or scsi_host_dev_release; also inspect systemd-udevd or driver-probe call traces referencing ibmvscsi or similar SCSI transports.

What your security team should do
- Schedule kernel updates for all systems exposing SCSI storage within the next maintenance window
- Add kernel oops and panic alerts to existing monitoring for rapid detection of exploitation attempts
- Restrict unprivileged module loading and driver probes until patches are deployed
- Review logs for prior occurrences of the spawn-failure message on production hosts
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: scsi: core: Fix bad pointer dereference when ehandler kthread is invalid Commit 66a834d09293 ("scsi: core: Fix error handling of scsi_host_alloc()") changed the allocation logic to call put_device() to perform host cleanup with the assumption that IDA removal and stopping the kthread would properly be performed in scsi_host_dev_release(). However, in the unlikely case that the error handler thread fails to spawn, shost->ehandler is set to ERR_PTR(-ENOMEM). The error handler cleanup code in scsi_host_dev_release() will call kthread_stop() if shost->ehandler != NULL which will always be the case whether the kthread was successfully spawned or not. In the case that it failed to spawn this has the nasty side effect of trying to dereference an invalid pointer when kthread_stop() is called. The following splat provides an example of this behavior in the wild: scsi host11: error handler thread failed to spawn, error = -4 Kernel attempted to read user page (10c) - exploit attempt?
