What it actually does
Failure to propagate tail_call_reachable state from check_max_stack_depth() into env->prog->aux allows a BPF program containing tail calls to reach the interpreter after JIT failure, causing ___bpf_prog_run to perform an out-of-bounds slab read during subprogram execution.
Why it matters to the business
Systems that load unprivileged or complex BPF programs may experience kernel crashes, memory corruption, or denial of service when JIT compilation fails and the interpreter is used instead.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a BPF program with tail calls across subprograms that triggers JIT failure paths; the missing tail_call_reachable flag prevents correct rejection, allowing the interpreter to execute the program and dereference invalid stack or instruction memory.
How to fix it
Upgrade to a kernel containing the fix from commit ebf7d1f508a7 that correctly tracks tail_call_reachable across subprograms; rebuild and reload all BPF programs after the update.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the presence of the fix by checking that check_max_stack_depth() updates aux->tail_call_reachable for every subprogram and that tailcall_bpf2bpf test cases pass under forced interpreter execution.
Typical attack path
- Load a BPF program containing tail calls between subprograms via bpf() syscall
- Force JIT compilation to fail (e.g., via resource limits or crafted subprogram structure)
- Trigger execution of the program under the interpreter
- Reach ___bpf_prog_run with an invalid tail-call target index
- Perform out-of-bounds read leading to KASAN report or kernel panic
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for KASAN slab-out-of-bounds reports originating from ___bpf_prog_run during bpf_prog_test_run or bpf syscall activity; inspect audit logs for unusual bpf() calls that load programs with multiple subprograms.
- BUG: KASAN: slab-out-of-bounds in ___bpf_prog_run
- Read of size 8 at addr .* by task .*test_progs
- tailcall_bpf2bpf
What your security team should do
- Apply the kernel update containing the referenced fix immediately on all systems that permit unprivileged BPF loading
- Audit BPF program loading paths and disable unprivileged BPF where not required
- Monitor for future BPF interpreter or JIT changes that affect tail-call handling
