What it actually does
Deadlock in cdnsp_thread_irq_handler due to use of spin_lock without disabling interrupts (spin_lock_irqsave), allowing nested interrupt context to acquire the same lock and cause CSD lock unresponsiveness on multi-CPU systems.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using affected Linux USB gadget drivers may experience kernel hangs or soft lockups during USB network class operations, leading to device unavailability and requiring reboots in environments relying on USB-based networking or peripheral functionality.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker or test workload triggers timing-sensitive USB NCM gadget activity that queues endpoint transfers from within timer or softirq context, causing the improperly protected spinlock in the IRQ thread handler to deadlock when an interrupt arrives while the lock is held.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream kernel patch replacing spin_lock/spin_unlock with spin_lock_irqsave/spin_lock_irqrestore in cdnsp_thread_irq_handler; rebuild and deploy the fixed kernel on affected systems; test NCM gadget functionality post-update.
How to confirm the fix worked
Boot patched kernel, reproduce NCM traffic patterns that previously triggered the deadlock, confirm absence of CSD lock warnings in dmesg, and verify spinlock usage via source inspection or dynamic tracing.
Typical attack path
- Trigger USB gadget NCM class activity via eth_start_xmit or ncm_tx_timeout
- Enter cdnsp_thread_irq_handler through softirq path without IRQ save
- Acquire spin_lock on shared structure while interrupts remain enabled
- Nested interrupt or timer fires and attempts re-acquisition of same lock
- CSD lock detection reports unresponsive CPU and system stalls
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for CSD lock unresponsive messages, native_queued_spin_lock_slowpath, cdnsp_thread_irq_handler, and call traces involving usb_ep_queue or ncm_tx_timeout around the publication date or during USB gadget usage.
- smp: csd: Detected non-responsive CSD lock
- cdnsp_thread_irq_handler.cold
- native_queued_spin_lock_slowpath
- usb_ep_queue+0x35/0x110
- ncm_tx_timeout
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel update on any systems exposing CDNSP USB gadget functionality
- Monitor kernel logs for CSD lock and spinlock deadlock signatures until patched
- Limit exposure by disabling unnecessary USB gadget drivers where feasible
