What it actually does
Improper netns handling in RDMA/ipoib allows interfaces with rtnl_link_ops to be skipped during default_device_exit, causing warnings and potential NULL pointer dereference on netns cleanup or shutdown.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using IPoIB with network namespaces may experience kernel warnings, instability, or panics during namespace deletion or reboot, disrupting RDMA networking and requiring unplanned restarts in affected Linux environments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access creates a non-initial network namespace, moves an IPoIB device into it, then deletes the namespace to trigger the flawed exit path and induce a warning or panic; no remote vector or known threat actors are associated.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 2c85ebc57b3e1817b6ce1a6b703928e113a90442 which sets the netns_refund flag for IPoIB devices.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel includes commit 2c85ebc57b3e1817b6ce1a6b703928e113a90442; attempt the reproduction steps (ip netns add/delete with device move) and confirm absence of the netdev_exit warning.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local shell or container access on a system with RDMA/ipoib interfaces
- Create a new network namespace
- Move the IPoIB device into the new namespace
- Delete the namespace to invoke default_device_exit
- Observe warning or trigger NULL dereference leading to panic
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for netdev_exit warnings or stack traces referencing ipoib and cleanup_net; check for repeated namespace creation/deletion events preceding panics.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrade on systems exposing RDMA/ipoib interfaces to non-initial namespaces
- Monitor kernel logs for netdev_exit warnings during namespace operations
- Restrict unprivileged use of network namespaces until patched
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: RDMA/ipoib: Fix warning caused by destroying non-initial netns After the commit 5ce2dced8e95 ("RDMA/ipoib: Set rtnl_link_ops for ipoib interfaces"), if the IPoIB device is moved to non-initial netns, destroying that netns lets the device vanish instead of moving it back to the initial netns, This is happening because default_device_exit() skips the interfaces due to having rtnl_link_ops set.
