Cloudanix analysis
A flaw in the Linux kernel's handling of certain radio network connections can slowly leak memory each time the connection is opened and closed, eventually slowing or crashing the system.

What it actually does
Missing free_netdev() call after unregister_netdev() in mkiss_close() leaves netdevice structures and associated allocations (hw addresses, queues) unfreed after mkiss_open() allocates and registers them via alloc_netdev_mqs.
Why it matters to the business
Repeated use of the mkiss hamradio TTY line discipline on Linux systems can gradually exhaust kernel memory, degrading performance and risking denial of service on long-running devices or routers.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access opens a TTY, issues ioctl calls to attach the mkiss line discipline (triggering mkiss_open and netdevice allocation), then closes the TTY to invoke mkiss_close without freeing the device; repeating the sequence leaks memory until the system is impaired.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing the commit that adds free_netdev() in mkiss_close(); rebuild and reboot affected systems. If the driver is unused, blacklist the mkiss module as a temporary mitigation.
How to confirm the fix worked
Inspect the mkiss_close function in the running kernel source or running kernel binary for the presence of free_netdev after unregister_netdev; confirm via kernel version strings or git log that the fix commit is included.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access or execute unprivileged code on a Linux host
- Open a TTY device and set the N_MKISS line discipline via TIOCSETD ioctl
- Trigger mkiss_open which allocates and registers a netdevice
- Close the TTY to call mkiss_close which unregisters but does not free the device
- Repeat the open/close cycle to accumulate unreferenced kernel memory
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and memory accounting tools for repeated allocations from alloc_netdev_mqs or kvmalloc without corresponding frees in the context of tty_ldisc_open or mkiss operations; correlate with processes issuing TIOCSETD ioctls on TTY devices.
What your security team should do
- Apply the upstream fix and schedule kernel updates across all Linux fleets within standard change windows
- Audit systems for use of the mkiss or hamradio drivers and disable them where not required
- Monitor kernel memory usage trends on hosts that may exercise TTY line disciplines
- Include this class of missing free_netdev patterns in future kernel fuzzing and static analysis runs
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: hamradio: fix memory leak in mkiss_close My local syzbot instance hit memory leak in mkiss_open()[1]. The problem was in missing free_netdev() in mkiss_close(). In mkiss_open() netdevice is allocated and then registered, but in mkiss_close() netdevice was only unregistered, but not freed.
