What it actually does
Out-of-bounds read in sg_copy_buffer triggered when resp_readcap16 receives a negative int alloc_len value that is passed as a huge arr_len to fill_from_dev_buffer, overflowing a 32-byte stack buffer.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel crashes or limited memory disclosure possible on systems loading the scsi_debug module, primarily affecting testing and development environments; low operational risk for production workloads.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker opens an sg device, issues a crafted SCSI command that reaches resp_readcap16 with an attacker-controlled negative alloc_len, and forces sg_copy_buffer to read far beyond the intended stack array.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream fix changing alloc_len to u32 (commit 050fad7c4534c13c8eb1d9c2ba66012e014773cb) or upgrade to a kernel containing that change; disable the scsi_debug module when not required for testing.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm alloc_len is declared as u32 inside resp_readcap16 in the kernel source; re-run the provided syzkaller reproducer and verify absence of KASAN stack-out-of-bounds reports.
Typical attack path
- Open /dev/sg* or equivalent SCSI generic device
- Send malformed WRITE or other command containing crafted parameters
- Invoke resp_readcap16 with negative alloc_len
- Trigger oversized memcpy in sg_copy_buffer resulting in KASAN-detected OOB read
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for KASAN stack-out-of-bounds reports naming sg_copy_buffer or resp_readcap16; inspect audit trails for unusual writes to sg devices followed by SCSI command 0x9e.
- BUG: KASAN: stack-out-of-bounds in sg_copy_buffer
- resp_readcap16+0x1ac
- scsi_debug_queuecommand
- fill_from_dev_buffer
- sg_copy_from_buffer
What your security team should do
- Patch or upgrade affected kernels containing the scsi_debug module
- Blacklist or unload scsi_debug on production systems
- Include scsi_debug paths in kernel fuzzing and KASAN monitoring

This leads to OOB in sg_copy_buffer(). To solve this issue, define alloc_len as u32.
