What it actually does
Calling smp_processor_id() from preemptible contexts in __target_init_cmd within target_core_mod for TCMU devices triggers a kernel BUG under DEBUG_PREEMPT, caused by work-queue command submission altering nr_cpu_allowed.
Why it matters to the business
Linux systems using TCMU fileio or user:zbc backends may experience kernel crashes during I/O workloads or shutdown, disrupting storage services and requiring reboots with potential data access loss.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access or control over SCSI target workloads submits I/O via blktests or similar patterns that invoke tcm_loop_queuecommand and target_init_cmd on a DEBUG_PREEMPT kernel, forcing the preemptible smp_processor_id() call and triggering the BUG.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit that replaces smp_processor_id() with raw_smp_processor_id() in target_core_mod; rebuild and reboot affected systems.
How to confirm the fix worked
Boot with DEBUG_PREEMPT, replay block/005-style workloads and shutdown sequences on TCMU devices, then confirm absence of the preemptible smp_processor_id() BUG message in dmesg.
Typical attack path
- Locate or configure a Linux host with TCMU devices and DEBUG_PREEMPT enabled
- Submit direct I/O or run storage test workloads that reach __target_init_cmd via work queues
- Trigger command abort paths or shutdown sequences that call smp_processor_id() in preemptible context
- Observe kernel BUG and potential system instability
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for repeated 'BUG: using smp_processor_id() in preemptible' entries with caller __target_init_cmd+0x157 and stack frames containing target_core_mod or tcm_loop.
- BUG: using smp_processor_id() in preemptible [00000000] code
- __target_init_cmd+0x157/0x170 [target_core_mod]
- caller is __target_init_cmd
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on any hosts exposing TCMU or LIO target devices
- Enable kernel panic-on-BUG or watchdog timers to limit blast radius of crashes
- Add the preemptible smp_processor_id() string to SIEM rules for proactive detection
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: scsi: target: core: Avoid smp_processor_id() in preemptible code The BUG message "BUG: using smp_processor_id() in preemptible [00000000] code" was observed for TCMU devices with kernel config DEBUG_PREEMPT. The message was observed when blktests block/005 was run on TCMU devices with fileio backend or user:zbc backend [1]. The commit 1130b499b4a7 ("scsi: target: tcm_loop: Use LIO wq cmd submission helper") triggered the symptom. The commit modified work queue to handle commands and changed 'current->nr_cpu_allowed' at smp_processor_id() call. The message was also observed at system shutdown when TCMU devices were not cleaned up [2]. The function smp_processor_id() was called in SCSI host work queue for abort handling, and triggered the BUG message. This symptom was observed regardless of the commit 1130b499b4a7 ("scsi: target: tcm_loop: Use LIO wq cmd submission helper"). To avoid the preemptible code check at smp_processor_id(), get CPU ID with raw_smp_processor_id() instead. The CPU ID is used for performance improvement then thread move to other CPU will not affect the code.
