What it actually does
Out-of-bounds read in fq_pie_qdisc_enqueue when traffic classification selects an invalid flow index (q->flows + q->flows_cnt) beyond the allocated memory region for the fq_pie qdisc structure.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using the fq_pie qdisc for traffic shaping may experience kernel crashes, leading to denial of service; in rare cases memory disclosure could aid further attacks on network infrastructure hosts.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local or network-adjacent access configures an fq_pie qdisc with a low flow count, adds a clsact filter that forces a high priority value, then injects packets that cause the scheduler to index past the end of the flow array during enqueue, triggering the out-of-bounds read.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing the fix for the fq_pie flow selection logic; rebuild and reboot systems that use fq_pie qdiscs; consider temporarily replacing fq_pie with another scheduler such as fq_codel if immediate patching is not feasible.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the kernel version contains the upstream commit that changes fq_pie flow index validation; reproduce the tc script and ping test and verify absence of KASAN splats; run kernel memory safety tools or syzkaller targeting sch_fq_pie.
Typical attack path
- Add fq_pie qdisc with small flows parameter via tc
- Attach clsact qdisc and egress matchall filter that sets high skb priority
- Send crafted packets (e.g., ICMP) that reach fq_pie_qdisc_enqueue
- Kernel performs invalid array access resulting in KASAN-detected slab OOB read
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for KASAN reports containing fq_pie_qdisc_enqueue and slab-out-of-bounds; inspect auditd or system call traces for sequences of tc qdisc add commands followed by high-volume packet transmission on the same interface.
- fq_pie_qdisc_enqueue+0x1314
- BUG: KASAN: slab-out-of-bounds in fq_pie
- tc qdisc add.*fq_pie flows 2
- matchall action skbedit priority 0x10002
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all hosts that expose network interfaces using fq_pie
- Audit tc qdisc configurations for fq_pie usage and replace where possible
- Monitor kernel logs for fq_pie-related OOB warnings
- Test patched kernels in staging before broad deployment
