What it actually does

Race condition in rp2 serial driver allows interrupt handler registration before firmware initialization completes via request_firmware_nowait; missing firmware leaves port structures uninitialized so rp2_uart_interrupt dereferences NULL pointers or triggers lockdep violations on interrupt.

Why it matters to the business

Kernel panic or system crash on systems using the rp2 serial controller when firmware is absent or slow to load, leading to denial of service and potential loss of serial console or device connectivity during boot or driver probe.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access or the ability to influence boot timing on rp2-equipped hardware triggers the race by ensuring firmware is missing or delayed; the now-registered interrupt fires, rp2_ch_interrupt accesses uninitialized ports, and the kernel oopses or deadlocks.

How to fix it

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing the fix that replaces request_firmware_nowait with synchronous request_firmware in rp2_probe so the driver is fully initialized before interrupts are enabled.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running kernel contains the commit that changed rp2.c to use request_firmware; attempt module load with missing firmware and verify no NULL dereference oops occurs and ports initialize correctly.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local code execution or control boot parameters on target rp2 hardware
  2. Prevent or delay firmware file from being present for request_firmware_nowait
  3. Allow rp2_probe to register rp2_uart_interrupt before rp2_fw_cb runs
  4. Generate an interrupt that reaches rp2_asic_interrupt while ports remain NULL
  5. Trigger NULL dereference or invalid spinlock usage leading to panic

How to detect it

Search kernel logs and dmesg for rp2_uart_interrupt, rp2_asic_interrupt, NULL pointer dereference at rp2.c:472, or the lockdep non-static key message during early boot or module load on systems with the rp2 driver.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel upgrade on any systems exposing the rp2 serial driver
  • Audit boot images and firmware packaging to ensure required firmware files are present before driver probe
  • Monitor kernel logs for rp2-related oops or lockdep warnings during driver initialization
  • Disable the rp2 driver if the hardware is not required

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: serial: rp2: use 'request_firmware' instead of 'request_firmware_nowait' In 'rp2_probe', the driver registers 'rp2_uart_interrupt' then calls 'rp2_fw_cb' through 'request_firmware_nowait'. In 'rp2_fw_cb', if the firmware don't exists, function just return without initializing ports of 'rp2_card'. But now the interrupt handler function has been registered, and when an interrupt comes, 'rp2_uart_interrupt' may access those ports then causing NULL pointer dereference or other bugs. Because the driver does some initialization work in 'rp2_fw_cb', in order to make the driver ready to handle interrupts, 'request_firmware' should be used instead of asynchronous 'request_firmware_nowait'. This report reveals it: INFO: trying to register non-static key. the code is fine but needs lockdep annotation. turning off the locking correctness validator.
