What it actually does
Failure to zero-initialize the TC_SKB_EXT skb extension structure after adding new fields leaves uninitialized memory that is later read as a boolean or other typed value during packet processing in net/openvswitch/flow.c.
Why it matters to the business
Networking stacks on affected Linux systems, especially those using Open vSwitch, may experience crashes, undefined behavior, or potential information disclosure when handling incoming traffic; the issue is old with stable low exploit probability and no known ransomware use.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker sends network frames that reach the Open vSwitch receive path; skb_ext_add allocates the extension without clearing memory, subsequent code reads the uninitialized fields as a _Bool, triggering UBSAN invalid-load or memory corruption.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing the zero-initialization fix for skb_ext_add; for AlmaLinux 8 systems also apply the thunderbird package update to 91.9.1-1.el8_6.alma or later that incorporates the backported change.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel contains the commit titled 'net: zero-initialize tc skb extension on allocation'; confirm absence of UBSAN 'invalid-load' messages referencing net/openvswitch/flow.c:899 after traffic processing; test with packet replay tools that exercise TC_SKB_EXT paths.
Typical attack path
- Attacker transmits crafted Ethernet/IP packets toward a system with Open vSwitch enabled
- Packets enter __netif_receive_skb_list_core and are passed to netdev_frame_hook
- ovs_vport_receive calls ovs_flow_key_extract which accesses the uninitialized TC_SKB_EXT fields
- UBSAN reports invalid-load or kernel uses the garbage value leading to crash or further exploitation
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for UBSAN entries containing 'invalid-load in net/openvswitch/flow.c', 'load of value .* is not a valid value for type _Bool', and call traces mentioning ovs_flow_key_extract or netdev_frame_hook; examine recent network receive paths on affected hosts.
- UBSAN: invalid-load in net/openvswitch/flow.c:899:28
- load of value .* is not a valid value for type '_Bool'
- ovs_flow_key_extract.cold+0xf/0x14 [openvswitch]
- netdev_frame_hook+0x323/0x610 [openvswitch]
What your security team should do
- Apply kernel and package updates within normal maintenance windows given low EPSS and lack of KEV listing
- Monitor for UBSAN reports in kernel logs on systems running Open vSwitch
- Review network-facing workloads for exposure to untrusted traffic while patches are deployed
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: zero-initialize tc skb extension on allocation Function skb_ext_add() doesn't initialize created skb extension with any value and leaves it up to the user. However, since extension of type TC_SKB_EXT originally contained only single value tc_skb_ext->chain its users used to just assign the chain value without setting whole extension memory to zero first. This assumption changed when TC_SKB_EXT extension was extended with additional fields but not all users were updated to initialize the new fields which leads to use of uninitialized memory afterwards.
