What it actually does

The flaw causes the TDP MMU iterator to advance incorrectly after yielding on mmu_lock contention in KVM x86, skipping top-level SPTEs and their children during zap operations, resulting in shadow page leaks or use-after-free when marking pages dirty or accessing freed structures.

Why it matters to the business

Virtualized Linux hosts risk VM instability, memory leaks, crashes during VM teardown, and potential data corruption in workloads, increasing operational downtime and requiring kernel updates despite low observed exploitation rates.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker triggers repeated TDP MMU zapping with yielding enabled during guest memory operations; the iterator restart logic fails to revisit the current GFN, allowing skipped SPTEs to cause leaks or UAF when subsequent put_root or zap operations access freed pages.

How to fix it

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing the fix for the TDP MMU iterator restart logic after yielding, ensuring tdp_iter_next properly restarts without advancing past unvisited entries.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm updated kernel version, reproduce zapping workloads under lock contention, and verify absence of warnings in kvm_mmu_uninit_tdp_mmu or kvm_is_zone_device_pfn paths.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain ability to influence KVM TDP MMU operations via guest VM or host access
  2. Induce mmu_lock contention and yielding during kvm_tdp_mmu_zap_all or similar paths
  3. Force iterator advancement that skips unvisited top-level SPTEs
  4. Trigger VM destruction or root freeing to manifest leaks or use-after-free
  5. Observe or exploit resulting kernel warnings and page state corruption

How to detect it

Search kernel logs, dmesg, and system journals for warnings from kvm_mmu_uninit_tdp_mmu, kvm_is_zone_device_pfn, or page_count zero encounters during VM shutdown or root freeing operations.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel upgrades on all KVM hosts within standard maintenance windows
  • Enable kernel logging for TDP MMU warnings and monitor during VM lifecycle events
  • Review and test configurations that exercise heavy MMU yielding under load
  • Audit downstream distributions for backported fixes given high ecosystem prevalence of Linux kernels

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: KVM: x86/mmu: Don't advance iterator after restart due to yielding After dropping mmu_lock in the TDP MMU, restart the iterator during tdp_iter_next() and do not advance the iterator. Advancing the iterator results in skipping the top-level SPTE and all its children, which is fatal if any of the skipped SPTEs were not visited before yielding. When zapping all SPTEs, i.e. when min_level == root_level, restarting the iter and then invoking tdp_iter_next() is always fatal if the current gfn has as a valid SPTE, as advancing the iterator results in try_step_side() skipping the current gfn, which wasn't visited before yielding. Sprinkle WARNs on iter->yielded being true in various helpers that are often used in conjunction with yielding, and tag the helper with __must_check to reduce the probabily of improper usage. Failing to zap a top-level SPTE manifests in one of two ways. If a valid SPTE is skipped by both kvm_tdp_mmu_zap_all() and kvm_tdp_mmu_put_root(), the shadow page will be leaked and KVM will WARN accordingly. This directly triggers a WARN due to encountering a page with page_count() == 0, but it can also lead to data corruption and additional errors in the kernel. But with respect to leaking shadow pages, the bug was introduced by yielding before processing the current gfn. Alternatively, tdp_mmu_iter_cond_resched() could simply fall through, or callers could jump to their "retry" label. The downside of that approach is that tdp_mmu_iter_cond_resched() _must_ be called before anything else in the loop, and there's no easy way to enfornce that requirement. Ideally, KVM would handling the cond_resched() fully within the iterator macro (the code is actually quite clean) and avoid this entire class of bugs, but that is extremely difficult do wh ---truncated---
