What it actually does

Spurious interrupts in the GICv3 handler cause nmi_enter() state changes and IRQ re-enabling, allowing a subsequent interrupt to nest as an NMI and trigger BUG_ON(in_nmi()) followed by kernel panic.

Why it matters to the business

Systems running affected kernels on ARM64 hardware with GICv3 can experience sudden crashes and reboots during normal operation or idle, leading to unplanned downtime and loss of availability.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker or environmental condition triggers a spurious interrupt that the handler incorrectly treats as valid, re-enables interrupts, and permits a higher-priority interrupt to nest as an NMI, resulting in an unhandled nested-NMI scenario and immediate kernel panic.

How to fix it

Update to a Linux kernel containing the fix that moves spurious-interrupt handling to the earliest point in the GICv3 handler; apply the vendor-supplied kernel package for the affected distribution.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running kernel version contains the commit that relocates spurious handling before nmi_enter(); reproduce the original interrupt nesting scenario in a test environment and verify absence of the BUG at irq.c:99.

Typical attack path

  1. Trigger or wait for a spurious interrupt on GICv3 hardware
  2. Handler calls nmi_enter() and re-enables IRQs instead of returning early
  3. A second interrupt fires while still inside the first NMI context
  4. Nested NMI path hits BUG_ON(in_nmi()) and panics the kernel

How to detect it

Search kernel logs for the strings 'kernel BUG at irq.c:99', 'Internal error: Oops - BUG', 'Fatal exception in interrupt', and the call trace containing asm_nmi_enter and gic_handle_irq; examine dmesg and /var/log/kern.log around the time of any unexpected panics.

  • kernel BUG at irq.c:99
  • asm_nmi_enter+0x94/0x98
  • el1_irq+0x8c/0x180
  • Fatal exception in interrupt

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel updates on all ARM64 systems using GICv3
  • Monitor vendor security advisories for backported fixes in supported LTS kernels
  • Test updated kernels in staging before broad deployment to avoid boot or interrupt regressions

From the call trace, we can find three interrupts (noted A, B, C above): interrupt (A) is preempted by (B), which is further interrupted by (C). Subsequent investigations show that (B) results in nmi_enter() being called, but that it actually is a spurious interrupt. Furthermore, interrupts are reenabled in the context of (B), and (C) fires with NMI priority. We end-up with a nested NMI situation, something we definitely do not want to (and cannot) handle. The bug here is that spurious interrupts should never result in any state change, and we should just return to the interrupted context. Moving the handling of spurious interrupts as early as possible in the GICv3 handler fixes this issue. [maz: rewrote commit message, corrected Fixes: tag]
