What it actually does
Race condition in RISC-V kprobe handling causes kernel BUG_ON in __find_get_block during single-step execution of sys_read after ebreak insertion and sstatus manipulation, triggered when page faults occur before the kprobe slot is mapped.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel panics on RISC-V systems when kprobes trace common syscalls like read, disrupting monitoring, debugging, and any workloads relying on dynamic tracing, with potential for denial of service.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker writes a kprobe on sys_read via debugfs, enables the event, then performs read operations; the resulting instruction page fault during KPROBE_HIT_SS state leads to incorrect exception policy and the BUG.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream fix for riscv/kprobe page-fault handling during single-step; for listed MySQL packages upgrade to 8.0.35-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 or 8.0.35-0ubuntu0.22.04.1 as applicable.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel no longer panics when the reproducer kprobe is installed and sys_read is exercised; verify absence of the BUG message and correct single-step page-table population.
Typical attack path
- echo kprobe definition for sys_read into /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/kprobe_events
- echo 1 > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/kprobes/.../enable
- trigger sys_read via cat or similar
- kernel hits BUG_ON in buffer.c during ext4 inode handling
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for 'kernel BUG at fs/buffer.c:1251', 'KPROBE_HIT_SS', and ebreak-related page faults on RISC-V; inspect /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/kprobe_events for unexpected sys_read probes.
- kernel BUG at fs/buffer.c:1251
- KPROBE_HIT_SS
- Instruction page fault during kprobe single-step on riscv64
- /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/kprobe_events.*sys_read
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all RISC-V systems that use kprobes or ftrace
- Restrict debugfs access until patched
- Monitor for kernel BUG reports referencing fs/buffer.c:1251 on RISC-V

Here it trigger a 'Instruction page fault' exception (value at 'scause' is '0xc'), if PF is not filled into PageTabe for that slot yet. 4) Again kernel trap into page fault exception handler, where it choose different policy according to the state of running kprobe. Because afte 2) the state is KPROBE_HIT_SS, so kernel reset the current kp ---truncated---
