What it actually does

NULL pointer dereference in gf_node_unregister at scenegraph/base_scenegraph.c causes the application to crash when processing certain scenegraph data.

Why it matters to the business

Media processing or playback services using the affected library experience sudden outages and require restarts, interrupting content workflows for users and operators.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious input file that reaches gf_node_unregister with a NULL pointer; when the file is opened locally the dereference triggers an immediate crash and denial of service. No remote code execution is involved.

How to fix it

Upgrade affected GPAC installations to a version containing the fix for the NULL dereference; for Alpine-based apache2 packages update to 2.4.54-r0 or later.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed GPAC or apache2 package version meets or exceeds the listed fixed versions and test that previously crashing inputs no longer cause a crash.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain or generate a specially crafted scenegraph file
  2. Cause the target application to open the file (local file access or user interaction required)
  3. gf_node_unregister is invoked with a NULL pointer
  4. Application crashes resulting in denial of service

How to detect it

Review application and system logs around the time of crashes for segmentation faults or abrupt process terminations while processing media files; no specific post-exploitation artifacts are known.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the listed package upgrades immediately on all systems running the affected versions
  • Scan build pipelines and container images for the vulnerable library versions
  • Monitor for any new public exploits given the existing exploit maturity rating

The record

A NULL pointer dereference vulnerability exists in GPAC v1.1.0 via the function gf_node_unregister () at scenegraph/base_scenegraph.c. This vulnerability can lead to a Denial of Service (DoS).
