What it actually does

Insufficient input filtering on file paths allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to traverse directories and read arbitrary server files, resulting in disclosure of sensitive data such as configuration or credentials.

Why it matters to the business

Exposure of confidential files can lead to data breaches, loss of intellectual property, compliance violations, and serve as a stepping stone for further attacks, with stable low exploit probability but high potential impact if triggered.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker identifies a vulnerable endpoint accepting user-controlled paths, submits requests containing traversal sequences such as ../ or encoded equivalents to escape the intended directory, and retrieves the contents of targeted files in the server response.

How to fix it

Enforce strict allow-list validation on all file path inputs, reject traversal sequences, canonicalize paths before use, and deploy software updates containing fixes as they become available.

How to confirm the fix worked

Test endpoints with known traversal payloads such as ../../etc/passwd and confirm that responses no longer return file contents; review source code for path-handling functions and ensure sanitization is present.

Typical attack path

  1. Map application endpoints that accept file or path parameters
  2. Inject directory traversal payloads into unauthenticated requests
  3. Escalate to reading sensitive system or application files
  4. Use disclosed data to pivot toward additional compromise

How to detect it

Inspect web server and application logs for HTTP requests containing repeated ../ sequences, encoded equivalents such as %2e%2e%2f, or unusual file extensions in parameters associated with file serving functionality.

  • ../
  • %2e%2e/
  • ..%2f
  • ..%5c
  • GET.*\?file=.*\.\./

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching once fixed versions are released given the 873-day disclosure window
  • Implement web application firewall rules to block traversal patterns
  • Perform targeted code audits on file-access logic
  • Monitor logs for anomalous path patterns until mitigation is complete

The record

Insufficient user input filtering leads to arbitrary file read by non-authenticated attacker, which results in sensitive information disclosure.
