What it actually does

Buffer overflow in tvnviewer.exe allows remote code execution when processing a crafted FramebufferUpdate packet from a malicious VNC server.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers could gain full control of systems running the vulnerable viewer, risking data theft, ransomware deployment, or lateral movement; widespread use of VNC viewers in Linux environments increases exposure despite low EPSS and no KEV listing after 1794 days.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker hosts a malicious VNC server and tricks a user into connecting with the vulnerable TightVNC Viewer; the server then sends a specially crafted FramebufferUpdate packet that overflows a buffer and executes arbitrary instructions on the client system.

How to fix it

Upgrade affected packages to the listed fixed versions: Debian 11 to 5.10.120-1, Debian 12/13 to 5.17.3-1, and Ubuntu linux-oem-5.14 to 5.14.0-1033.36; apply vendor patches for TightVNC Viewer immediately and verify no older versions remain in the environment.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm package versions match or exceed the fixed releases using distribution package managers; test VNC connections against a known patched viewer and review changelog entries for the buffer handling fix.

Typical attack path

  1. Deploy or compromise a VNC server under attacker control
  2. Social engineer or phish a target into initiating a VNC connection to the malicious server
  3. Send a malicious FramebufferUpdate packet during the session handshake
  4. Trigger buffer overflow to execute attacker-supplied code on the viewer host

How to detect it

Review VNC client logs for unexpected FramebufferUpdate packets or crashes around connection time; correlate process execution of tvnviewer.exe with network connections to untrusted servers and inspect for post-exploitation artifacts such as new processes or file modifications.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching all listed Linux distributions within the next sprint given the critical CVSS and remote unauthenticated attack vector
  • Scan inventories for any remaining TightVNC Viewer instances and replace with current releases
  • Monitor EPSS trend (stable at 0.0234) and threat intelligence feeds for any new exploit activity
  • Restrict VNC usage to trusted networks or enforce VPN with strong authentication until upgrades complete

The record

Buffer Overflow vulnerability in tvnviewer.exe of TightVNC Viewer allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary instructions via a crafted FramebufferUpdate packet from a VNC server.
