What it actually does

Heap buffer overflow in realPropagate() at propagate.cpp permits out-of-bounds writes on the heap during signal propagation processing.

Why it matters to the business

Applications built with the vulnerable library can be crashed or taken over remotely, resulting in service outages, data compromise, or unauthorized control of audio and signal-processing software.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts input that reaches the realPropagate function, overflows the heap buffer, and leverages the corruption to execute arbitrary code or cause denial of service in any application using the library.

How to fix it

Upgrade the Faust library to a version containing a corrected realPropagate implementation; recompile and redeploy all dependent applications; apply compensating controls such as strict input validation until patches are available.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed Faust version is newer than 2.35.0, review the propagate.cpp source or binary for bounds checks around realPropagate, and execute regression tests with previously crashing inputs.

Typical attack path

  1. Locate a target application or service that links against the vulnerable Faust library
  2. Prepare malicious input designed to exercise the realPropagate code path
  3. Deliver the input over the network or via file to trigger the overflow
  4. Exploit the resulting heap corruption for code execution or crash

How to detect it

Search application and system logs for segmentation faults or heap-related crashes originating from Faust-linked binaries; examine core dumps or crash reports for patterns consistent with buffer overflows in propagate.cpp.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately inventory all products and builds that incorporate Faust and prioritize upgrades
  • Add runtime protections such as ASLR, stack canaries, and heap integrity checks where feasible
  • Monitor upstream Faust releases and security advisories for the availability of fixed versions

The record

Faust v2.35.0 was discovered to contain a heap-buffer overflow in the function realPropagate() at propagate.cpp.
