What it actually does
Heap-based buffer overflow in the error-handling module triggered by a large volume of incoming socket connections in a short time, resulting in denial of service.
Why it matters to the business
Disruption of media streaming or RTSP services relying on Live555, leading to availability loss and operational downtime; the vulnerability has been public for over four years with publicly available exploits but low and stable exploitation probability.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker rapidly opens a large number of TCP connections to the Live555 server, overwhelming the socket handling logic and forcing execution into the error-handling path where the heap buffer overflow occurs and crashes the process.
How to fix it
Upgrade to a version of Live555 newer than 1.08 that properly handles high connection rates; implement network-level rate limiting and connection throttling in front of the service as an interim control.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed Live555 version exceeds 1.08; perform controlled connection-rate testing in a lab environment to verify the error-handling path no longer overflows; monitor process stability under load.
Typical attack path
- Identify publicly reachable Live555-based server
- Rapidly establish thousands of TCP connections in quick succession
- Trigger error-handling module via connection flood
- Cause heap buffer overflow leading to process crash or DoS
How to detect it
Review application and system logs for repeated socket errors or crashes coinciding with connection spikes; inspect process dumps or core files for heap corruption artifacts; correlate with network flow data showing sudden high connection counts to the service port.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize upgrade of all Live555 instances to a fixed release
- Deploy network ACLs or proxies to limit connection rates from untrusted sources
- Add monitoring for sudden spikes in inbound connections to Live555 ports
- Review downstream dependents and update any embedded copies of the library
The record
Live555 through 1.08 does not handle socket connections properly. A huge number of incoming socket connections in a short time invokes the error-handling module, in which a heap-based buffer overflow happens. An attacker can leverage this to launch a DoS attack.
