What it actually does
Multiple memory safety bugs resulting in memory corruption that can be leveraged for arbitrary code execution.
Why it matters to the business
Successful exploitation could allow attackers to run malicious code on user systems, risking data theft, credential compromise, or further network intrusion.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts specially formed web content or email that, when rendered by the vulnerable browser or client, triggers memory corruption to execute arbitrary code without user interaction beyond visiting the page or opening the message.
How to fix it
Upgrade Firefox to 92 or later, Firefox ESR to 78.14 or later, and Thunderbird to 78.14 or later.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm installed product versions meet or exceed the fixed releases and review release notes for memory safety fixes.
Typical attack path
- Attacker prepares malicious webpage or email attachment exploiting memory safety issues
- Victim accesses the content using a vulnerable Firefox, ESR, or Thunderbird instance
- Memory corruption occurs during content processing
- Arbitrary code is executed in the context of the application
How to detect it
Review browser and system logs for unexpected crashes or abnormal process behavior coinciding with web or email activity; monitor for post-exploitation artifacts such as new processes spawned from the browser.
What your security team should do
- Apply updates to all affected Mozilla products immediately
- Restrict use of unsupported browser or email client versions
- Enable application sandboxing and content blocking where available
The record
Mozilla developers reported memory safety bugs present in Firefox 91 and Firefox ESR 78.13. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort some of these could have been exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox ESR < 78.14, Thunderbird < 78.14, and Firefox < 92.
