What it actually does
CVE-2021-34996 is a remote command execution vulnerability in Commvault CommCell 11.22.22 involving the Demo_ExecuteProcessOnGroup workflow. The flaw allows an attacker with low-level access, or an attacker who bypasses the affected authentication mechanism, to create or invoke a workflow that specifies an arbitrary operating-system command. That command executes on the affected CommCell system with SYSTEM privileges, giving the attacker full control of the host and the ability to access, modify, or disrupt backup management operations.
Why it matters to the business
Successful exploitation can compromise the backup control plane, which is especially high impact because backup infrastructure commonly has broad visibility into servers, applications, credentials, storage, and recovery workflows. An attacker could disable or tamper with backups, delete recovery points, stage ransomware, exfiltrate protected data, or use the CommCell server as a privileged foothold to move laterally. The high EPSS score indicates a meaningful likelihood of exploitation activity even though this vulnerability is not currently listed in CISA KEV.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker first reaches the Commvault CommCell management interface or workflow service over the network. Although exploitation nominally requires authentication, the vulnerability description notes that the relevant authentication mechanism can be bypassed, reducing the practical barrier to attack. The attacker creates or triggers the vulnerable Demo_ExecuteProcessOnGroup workflow and supplies an attacker-controlled command as part of the workflow definition or execution parameters. The CommCell system then executes that command locally in the context of SYSTEM. From there, the attacker can deploy tools, create persistence, harvest credentials, alter backup jobs, disable recovery capabilities, or pivot to other systems managed by or trusted by the backup platform.
How to fix it
Upgrade Commvault CommCell to a vendor-supported version that contains the fix for this vulnerability. Because no exact fixed version was provided in the input, consult Commvault’s advisory, maintenance release notes, and support portal for the corrected release applicable to the installed feature release. If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict access to CommCell management and workflow interfaces to trusted administrative networks, disable or remove demo/sample workflows if supported, review and remove unnecessary workflow execution permissions, enforce strong administrative authentication, and monitor for unexpected workflow creation or execution. Treat exposed CommCell management services as high-risk until patched or otherwise isolated.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed Commvault CommCell version is no longer 11.22.22 and matches a vendor-supported fixed build. Review the CommCell management console or command-line inventory for the exact service pack, maintenance release, and hotfix level. Verify that untrusted users cannot access workflow creation or execution features and that the Demo_ExecuteProcessOnGroup workflow is absent, disabled, or no longer accepts arbitrary command input. From a network perspective, confirm that CommCell administrative services are not exposed to the internet and are reachable only from approved administrative segments. After remediation, perform a controlled negative test using a non-destructive command, if permitted by policy, to ensure workflow command execution is blocked or constrained as expected.
Typical attack path
- Identify an exposed or reachable Commvault CommCell 11.22.22 installation.
- Access the CommCell workflow functionality using valid low-privileged credentials or by abusing the authentication bypass condition described for the vulnerability.
- Create, modify, or invoke the vulnerable Demo_ExecuteProcessOnGroup workflow.
- Pass an arbitrary operating-system command through the workflow parameters.
- Achieve command execution as SYSTEM on the CommCell host.
- Deploy follow-on payloads, establish persistence, collect credentials, tamper with backup configuration, or move laterally.
How to detect it
To determine whether this vulnerability was already exploited, review Commvault audit, workflow, web, service, and application logs for unexpected workflow creation, modification, or execution events, especially involving Demo_ExecuteProcessOnGroup. Correlate those events with operating-system process creation telemetry on the CommCell host, looking for Commvault services spawning command interpreters or scripting engines such as cmd.exe, powershell.exe, wscript.exe, cscript.exe, mshta.exe, rundll32.exe, certutil.exe, bitsadmin.exe, or curl.exe. On Windows, collect Security Event ID 4688, Sysmon Event ID 1, PowerShell operational logs, service installation events, scheduled task events, and local group membership changes around suspicious workflow activity. Review authentication logs for anomalous access to CommCell administration functions, new users, role changes, or logins from unusual source IP addresses. Examine backup configuration changes, disabled jobs, deleted storage policies, altered retention settings, and unexpected pruning/deletion events. If endpoint detection telemetry is available, hunt for SYSTEM-level child processes launched from Commvault binaries or service accounts followed by network connections, credential access, archive creation, or file staging.

What your security team should do
- Prioritize upgrade or vendor hotfix deployment for all Commvault CommCell 11.22.22 systems because exploitation results in SYSTEM-level remote code execution on backup infrastructure.
- Immediately restrict network access to CommCell administrative and workflow interfaces using firewalls, VPN, and administrative jump hosts.
- Audit CommCell users, roles, API access, and workflow permissions; remove unnecessary access and rotate credentials for privileged CommCell accounts.
- Search for suspicious workflow creation, modification, or execution events, especially references to Demo_ExecuteProcessOnGroup or unexpected command-line activity spawned by Commvault services.
- Review the integrity of backup jobs, retention policies, storage libraries, deduplication stores, and recovery points for signs of tampering or deletion.
- Hunt for post-exploitation behavior on CommCell hosts, including new local administrators, suspicious scheduled tasks, web shells, remote access tools, credential dumping tools, and unexpected PowerShell or cmd.exe execution.
- If compromise is suspected, isolate the CommCell server carefully, preserve logs and forensic artifacts, rotate credentials that may be accessible to Commvault, and validate restore capability from known-good backups.
The record
This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Commvault CommCell 11.22.22. Although authentication is required to exploit this vulnerability, the existing authentication mechanism can be bypassed. The specific flaw exists within the Demo_ExecuteProcessOnGroup workflow. By creating a workflow, an attacker can specify an arbitrary command to be executed. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of SYSTEM. Was ZDI-CAN-13889.
