What it actually does

CVE-2021-30952 is an integer overflow in WebKit-related web content processing that can corrupt memory when a victim device processes maliciously crafted web content. Successful exploitation can allow arbitrary code execution in the context of the browser or web content process. Depending on platform hardening and exploit chaining, attackers may combine this with sandbox escape or privilege escalation vulnerabilities to gain broader device control. The issue affects Apple platforms using Safari/WebKit, including iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS, and related WebKit-based packages in Linux ecosystems such as WebKitGTK and WPE WebKit.

Why it matters to the business

A successful attack can compromise user devices through web content, enabling data theft, malware deployment, session hijacking, surveillance, or follow-on compromise of enterprise accounts accessed from the affected device. Because this vulnerability is listed in CISA KEV and marked as exploited in the wild, organizations should treat exposure as operationally urgent, especially for managed Apple fleets and Linux desktop or embedded applications that rely on WebKitGTK or WPE WebKit. The KEV remediation due date is 2026-03-26, and reported association with ransomware activity increases the need to rapidly patch and investigate suspicious browser crashes or post-exploitation behavior.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker prepares a malicious webpage, advertisement, iframe, email link, captive portal, or in-app browser destination that triggers the integer overflow during WebKit content parsing or rendering. The victim must interact by opening or previewing attacker-controlled web content. If exploitation succeeds, memory corruption is converted into code execution inside the browser or WebKit content process. The attacker may then run payloads, steal browser-accessible data, abuse authenticated sessions, or chain the exploit with additional vulnerabilities to escape the browser sandbox and persist on the device. Public reporting and KEV status indicate real-world exploitation, including references to ransomware-related activity, so exploitation should not be treated as theoretical.

How to fix it

Upgrade affected Apple products to versions that include the fix: iOS 15.2 or later, iPadOS 15.2 or later, macOS Monterey 12.1 or later, Safari 15.2 or later, tvOS 15.2 or later, and watchOS 8.3 or later. For Linux distributions and applications using WebKitGTK or WPE WebKit, apply the vendor-provided security updates from Debian, Fedora, WebKitGTK, WPE WebKit, or the relevant package maintainer. Where immediate patching is not possible, reduce exposure by restricting untrusted web browsing, disabling or limiting embedded WebKit-based viewers, enforcing browser isolation for high-risk users, blocking known malicious URLs, and ensuring endpoint detection and response coverage is active. Because this issue is in KEV, patching should be tracked as a compliance and risk-reduction priority.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm Apple devices report fixed or later OS and Safari versions through MDM, endpoint inventory, or device compliance tooling. Validate macOS systems are on Monterey 12.1 or later where applicable and Safari is 15.2 or later. For Linux systems, query package managers for installed WebKitGTK and WPE WebKit package versions and verify they match the distribution security advisory for this vulnerability. Run authenticated vulnerability scans where supported, and verify that embedded applications using WebKit have been rebuilt or updated against patched libraries. Confirm compensating controls by testing that unmanaged or outdated devices are blocked from sensitive resources until updated.

Typical attack path

  1. Attacker identifies users or devices running vulnerable Safari, iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, watchOS, WebKitGTK, or WPE WebKit versions.
  2. Attacker hosts or injects maliciously crafted web content designed to trigger the integer overflow.
  3. Victim opens a malicious link, compromised site, advertisement, message preview, or embedded browser view.
  4. WebKit processes the content and memory corruption occurs.
  5. Exploit achieves code execution in the browser or web content process.
  6. Attacker deploys a second-stage payload, steals web session data, or attempts sandbox escape and privilege escalation.
  7. Attacker performs follow-on actions such as credential theft, persistence, lateral movement, or ransomware staging where additional access is achieved.

How to detect it

Detection should focus on signs of browser exploitation and post-exploitation because the exploit content itself may not leave a stable, unique indicator. Review Apple Unified Logs, Safari and WebKit crash reports, endpoint telemetry, EDR process lineage, proxy logs, DNS logs, and MDM compliance history. Look for Safari or WebKit content process crashes immediately after visiting unfamiliar domains, repeated EXC_BAD_ACCESS or memory corruption crashes, Safari spawning unusual child processes, unsigned or unexpected binaries created shortly after browsing activity, suspicious configuration profiles, persistence changes, or outbound connections to newly observed infrastructure. For iOS and iPadOS, collect sysdiagnose where possible and review crash logs for WebKit-related processes. For macOS, inspect DiagnosticReports, Unified Logs, LaunchAgents, LaunchDaemons, login items, browser extensions, and quarantine events. For Linux WebKitGTK or WPE WebKit deployments, review application crashes, core dumps, system journal entries, package update timelines, and outbound network activity from applications embedding WebKit. Correlate suspicious activity with threat intelligence related to Interlock ransomware or other campaigns reported to exploit WebKit/browser vulnerabilities, while recognizing that campaign names in reporting may refer to broader exploitation clusters rather than a single deterministic IOC.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching of all affected Apple devices and WebKitGTK/WPE WebKit packages because the vulnerability is KEV-listed and exploited in the wild.
  • Use MDM and endpoint inventory to identify Safari, iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS versions below the fixed releases.
  • Hunt for suspicious Safari or WebKit crashes, unexpected child processes, newly installed profiles, persistence artifacts, and post-exploitation activity around browser use.
  • Increase monitoring for users who clicked suspicious links or visited known compromised sites before patching.
  • Treat confirmed exploitation as potential endpoint compromise and perform full incident response, including credential and session-token review.
  • Apply network filtering, browser isolation, and URL detonation for high-risk users until all affected devices are remediated.
  • For Linux environments, update distribution packages for WebKitGTK and WPE WebKit and restart dependent applications so patched libraries are loaded.
  • Track remediation against the CISA KEV due date of 2026-03-26 and report exceptions with compensating controls.

The record

An integer overflow was addressed with improved input validation. This issue is fixed in tvOS 15.2, macOS Monterey 12.1, Safari 15.2, iOS 15.2 and iPadOS 15.2, watchOS 8.3. Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution.
