What it actually does
This is a memory-corruption vulnerability that can allow a locally running application to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. In practical terms, successful exploitation breaks the normal boundary between an app and the operating system kernel, enabling full device compromise: reading protected memory, modifying system state, disabling security controls, installing persistence, or hiding malicious activity. The vendor reported active exploitation in the wild, and the issue is listed in CISA KEV, indicating real-world attacker use rather than only theoretical risk.
Why it matters to the business
Compromise can result in full control of affected Apple devices, including access to sensitive data, credentials, communications, and enterprise resources reachable from the device. Because kernel-level compromise can evade many user-space security tools, incidents may require device isolation, forensic triage, reimaging, and credential rotation. The KEV remediation deadline was 2021-11-17 and the vulnerability has been public for 1758 days, so any remaining exposure should be treated as overdue and high priority even though it is not specifically known to be used in ransomware campaigns. Asset inventory data that flags downstream or source dependencies, such as tensorflow/tensorflow GIT, should be reviewed carefully because this input appears to mix Apple platform remediation with package-level fixed commits.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker first needs a way to get attacker-controlled code or content processed by the target device, commonly by convincing a user to install or run a malicious application, open hostile content, or interact with a delivery chain that launches a vulnerable local component. The malicious code triggers the memory-corruption condition and manipulates kernel memory so execution flow is redirected to attacker-controlled logic. Once code execution occurs in kernel context, the attacker can elevate from normal application privileges to the highest operating-system privilege level, bypass sandboxing, access protected data, tamper with security controls, and install follow-on payloads. Because the flaw was reported as actively exploited, defenders should assume exploit chains may have combined this local kernel privilege escalation with an initial remote or social-engineering vector.
How to fix it
Apply vendor fixes immediately. For Apple platforms, update to macOS Big Sur 11.5.1 or later, iOS 14.7.1 or later, iPadOS 14.7.1 or later, and watchOS 7.6.1 or later. Where vulnerability management tooling flags tensorflow/tensorflow GIT under this identifier, validate the advisory mapping and rebuild from a fixed commit; the provided fixed commits are a7c02f1a9bbc35473969618a09ee5f9f5d3e52d9 and 2a0f59ecfe64d4e7750e406f00f783ff4bd34631. If immediate patching is not possible, reduce exposure by restricting installation of untrusted applications, enforcing MDM controls, limiting sideloading, disabling unnecessary local execution paths, isolating high-risk devices, and increasing monitoring for privilege-escalation behavior. Mitigation should not be considered equivalent to patching because successful exploitation grants kernel-level privileges.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the operating system build is at or above the fixed release: macOS Big Sur 11.5.1, iOS 14.7.1, iPadOS 14.7.1, or watchOS 7.6.1. Use MDM, EDR, vulnerability scanners, or local system inventory to verify version compliance across all managed devices. For source dependencies flagged as tensorflow/tensorflow GIT, confirm the deployed revision contains one of the fixed commits or a later commit that includes the patch. Re-run vulnerability scans after remediation and verify the finding no longer appears. Also validate that devices can no longer install or execute untrusted applications outside approved policy where that control is part of the mitigation plan.
Typical attack path
- Identify a target running a vulnerable Apple OS version or an application stack that includes a flagged vulnerable dependency.
- Deliver a malicious app, malicious content, or another exploit-chain component that causes attacker-controlled code to run locally.
- Trigger the memory-corruption bug in the vulnerable kernel-exposed code path.
- Use memory corruption primitives to gain arbitrary code execution in kernel context.
- Disable or bypass security controls, escape sandbox restrictions, and access protected data or credentials.
- Deploy persistence, surveillance tooling, or additional payloads while attempting to hide kernel-level activity.
How to detect it
There are no universally reliable public indicators that uniquely identify exploitation of this vulnerability. Detection should focus on evidence of local privilege escalation and post-exploitation activity on devices that were running vulnerable versions. Review MDM inventory and EDR telemetry for devices below the fixed OS versions, then examine unified logs, kernel panic reports, crash logs, installation history, configuration profiles, launch agents, launch daemons, login items, suspicious mobile device management changes, and unexpected privileged processes. On macOS, review /var/log, Unified Logging, /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports, /Library/LaunchAgents, /Library/LaunchDaemons, ~/Library/LaunchAgents, installed profiles, and recent application quarantine events. On iOS/iPadOS/watchOS, rely on MDM compliance data, device analytics, crash diagnostics, suspicious profile installation, abnormal battery/network behavior, and any EDR/mobile threat defense telemetry available. Give special attention to abnormal crashes shortly before new persistence artifacts, unexplained elevation events, security tooling failures, or suspicious outbound connections. Because exploitation may occur as part of a larger chain, correlate local device anomalies with phishing, malicious app installation, unusual authentication, and data-access events.
What your security team should do
- Treat all vulnerable Apple devices as high-priority remediation targets because the issue is in CISA KEV and has known active exploitation history.
- Use MDM or endpoint inventory to identify devices below macOS Big Sur 11.5.1, iOS 14.7.1, iPadOS 14.7.1, or watchOS 7.6.1 and force update or quarantine them.
- Hunt for signs of prior compromise on devices that remained vulnerable after public disclosure, especially unusual kernel panics, unauthorized profiles, unknown persistence mechanisms, and suspicious privileged processes.
- Restrict execution of untrusted applications and enforce application control, notarization, and managed app installation policies.
- If package scanners report tensorflow/tensorflow GIT exposure, verify the advisory mapping and update to a revision containing a7c02f1a9bbc35473969618a09ee5f9f5d3e52d9 or 2a0f59ecfe64d4e7750e406f00f783ff4bd34631.
- Prioritize forensic review and credential rotation for high-value users or devices that showed suspicious behavior while running vulnerable versions.
- Track KEV compliance reporting; the CISA due date has long passed, so remaining exceptions should require documented risk acceptance.
The record
A memory corruption issue was addressed with improved memory handling. This issue is fixed in macOS Big Sur 11.5.1, iOS 14.7.1 and iPadOS 14.7.1, watchOS 7.6.1. An application may be able to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.
