What it actually does
Improper validation of IMAP server responses injected before STARTTLS handshake completion allows processing of attacker-controlled data, resulting in display of fabricated folder structures.
Why it matters to the business
Users of the email client may encounter misleading folder listings that could facilitate deception or operational confusion in email workflows; the vulnerability has low exploit prevalence and no known active campaigns.
How an attack unfolds
An on-path attacker intercepts an IMAP connection configured for STARTTLS, injects crafted responses prior to TLS negotiation, and causes the client to accept and render fabricated folder metadata without cryptographic protection.
How to fix it
Upgrade Mozilla Thunderbird to version 78.12 or later; disable STARTTLS-only IMAP configurations where possible until patched.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify client version is 78.12 or newer; confirm STARTTLS sessions reject pre-handshake injected data through controlled testing of IMAP folder enumeration.
Typical attack path
- Establish network position to observe or intercept IMAP traffic
- Inject unauthenticated IMAP responses before STARTTLS completion
- Cause client to parse and display attacker-supplied folder information
How to detect it
Examine IMAP protocol logs and network captures for unexpected folder listings or responses received outside established TLS sessions; correlate with client version telemetry.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize update of all Thunderbird installations to 78.12 or newer
- Audit IMAP account configurations for mandatory TLS usage
- Review email client update policies to reduce exposure windows on future releases
The record
If Thunderbird was configured to use STARTTLS for an IMAP connection, and an attacker injected IMAP server responses prior to the completion of the STARTTLS handshake, then Thunderbird didn't ignore the injected data. This could have resulted in Thunderbird showing incorrect information, for example the attacker could have tricked Thunderbird to show folders that didn't exist on the IMAP server. This vulnerability affects Thunderbird < 78.12.
