What it actually does
This is a network-exploitable authentication bypass in HPE Edgeline Infrastructure Manager prior to version 1.22. An unauthenticated remote attacker can bypass remote authentication and reach privileged management functionality, enabling arbitrary command execution, privileged access, configuration modification, and denial of service. The CVSS vector indicates exploitation requires no credentials, no user interaction, low attack complexity, and can fully compromise confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the management appliance and systems it controls.
Why it matters to the business
Successful exploitation can give an attacker control over edge infrastructure management functions, allowing them to disrupt managed systems, alter infrastructure configuration, deploy malicious changes, or render management services unavailable. Because the issue is weaponized, has a high EPSS score, and affects an infrastructure management product, exposed instances should be treated as high-priority even though it is not currently listed in CISA KEV or known ransomware use.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker first identifies an internet- or network-accessible HPE Edgeline Infrastructure Manager instance running a vulnerable version prior to 1.22. They then send crafted requests to the remote management interface that bypass normal authentication checks. Once authenticated controls are reachable without valid credentials, the attacker can invoke privileged management functions, execute arbitrary commands in the context of the application or appliance, change configuration, create persistence through configuration or account changes if supported by the product, and disrupt service availability. Because exploitation is unauthenticated and weaponized, attackers can automate scanning and exploitation across exposed management interfaces.
How to fix it
Upgrade HPE Edgeline Infrastructure Manager / HPE Edgeline Infrastructure Management Software to version 1.22 or later. If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict access to the management interface to trusted administrative networks only, block internet exposure, enforce network-level access controls or VPN access, monitor for unauthenticated access attempts, and consider temporarily disabling affected remote management services until patched. After remediation, rotate credentials and review configuration integrity if exposure existed before patching.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the deployed HPE Edgeline Infrastructure Manager version is 1.22 or later through the product UI, appliance CLI, package inventory, or vendor-supported version check. Validate that management interfaces are not reachable from untrusted networks. Perform an authenticated configuration review to ensure no unauthorized users, credentials, jobs, scripts, or configuration changes were introduced. If vulnerability scanning is used, run an up-to-date scanner or vendor advisory check that specifically detects HPE Edgeline Infrastructure Manager versions prior to 1.22.
Typical attack path
- Scan for exposed HPE Edgeline Infrastructure Manager interfaces on management networks or the internet.
- Fingerprint the service and version to identify deployments prior to version 1.22.
- Send crafted unauthenticated requests that bypass remote authentication.
- Access privileged management functionality without valid credentials.
- Execute arbitrary commands, alter configuration, or impair service availability.
- Use the compromised management plane to maintain access, pivot, or disrupt managed edge infrastructure.
How to detect it
Investigate whether vulnerable instances were exposed before upgrading. Review HPE Edgeline Infrastructure Manager application logs, appliance system logs, web access logs, reverse proxy logs, firewall logs, VPN logs, and SIEM events for unauthenticated requests followed by privileged actions. Look for access from unfamiliar IP addresses, requests to administrative endpoints without a successful login event, failed or anomalous authentication flows immediately preceding configuration changes, unexpected command execution, new or modified administrative users, service restarts, device onboarding/removal, configuration exports/imports, and unexplained denial-of-service symptoms. Correlate timestamps of suspicious management activity with network connections from untrusted sources. If command execution is suspected, preserve appliance logs and capture process history, shell history where available, scheduled tasks, startup scripts, and modified configuration files for forensic review.
What your security team should do
- Treat externally reachable or broadly accessible HPE Edgeline Infrastructure Manager instances as urgent patch targets due to unauthenticated remote exploitation and weaponized exploit maturity.
- Upgrade all affected deployments to version 1.22 or later.
- Immediately restrict management interface access to trusted administrative networks, VPNs, or bastion hosts.
- Review logs and configuration history for suspicious unauthenticated access, unexpected administrative actions, command execution, service restarts, and configuration changes.
- Rotate administrative credentials and secrets associated with the management platform if compromise cannot be ruled out.
- Add continuous monitoring for exposure of HPE Edgeline Infrastructure Manager services and alert on newly exposed management interfaces.
- Ensure backups and recovery procedures exist for the management appliance and managed infrastructure configurations.
The record
A security vulnerability has been identified in the HPE Edgeline Infrastructure Manager, also known as HPE Edgeline Infrastructure Management Software, prior to version 1.22. The vulnerability could be remotely exploited to bypass remote authentication leading to execution of arbitrary commands, gaining privileged access, causing denial of service, and changing the configuration. HPE has released a software update to resolve the vulnerability in the HPE Edgeline Infrastructure Manager.
