What it actually does
A malicious FTP server can supply a PASV response that causes the embedded curl client to initiate an outbound connection to an attacker-specified IP address and port, enabling information disclosure about otherwise unreachable internal services via port scanning or banner extraction.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers gain a foothold for reconnaissance against private infrastructure, increasing the chance of follow-on attacks that could disrupt operations or lead to data exposure; the issue affects a widely used component with many downstream dependents and has a CISA remediation deadline in effect.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker hosts a malicious FTP server that, when curl connects, returns a crafted PASV reply directing the client to connect back to an internal target; the resulting connection allows the attacker to observe service responses or enumerate listening ports without direct network access.
How to fix it
Upgrade gitlab-org/gitlab to the fixed commit e8824bdbcb70ab6210d3de565d52662d95c96978 or later; verify the embedded curl version meets or exceeds the patched release and rebuild any dependent packages.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running binary reports a version containing commit e8824bdbcb70ab6210d3de565d52662d95c96978, then attempt to trigger the PASV behavior against a controlled test server and verify no unauthorized outbound connections occur.
Typical attack path
- Deploy a malicious FTP server under attacker control
- Induce the vulnerable client to initiate an FTP session to that server
- Return a PASV response containing an internal IP and port
- Observe the resulting outbound connection and any returned service data
How to detect it
Review application logs for FTP control connections followed by unexpected outbound TCP sessions to internal addresses; correlate with process execution of the gitlab service and look for banner-grabbing patterns in network flow data.
What your security team should do
- Apply the fixed commit immediately given the public disclosure and active exploitation window
- Scan for any remaining instances still running pre-fix versions
- Add network egress controls that restrict unexpected outbound connections from application containers
The record
A malicious server can use the FTP PASV response to trick curl 7.73.0 and earlier into connecting back to a given IP address and port, and this way potentially make curl extract information about services that are otherwise private and not disclosed, for example doing port scanning and service banner extractions.
