What it actually does
A content process can modify shared memory used for crash reporting, triggering an out-of-bounds write that corrupts memory and produces an exploitable crash.
Why it matters to the business
Successful exploitation can allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code, potentially resulting in data theft, system takeover, or service disruption; the issue is present in a widely used framework with many downstream dependents, increasing exposure across web applications.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies specially crafted content that causes the content process to alter crash-reporting shared memory, inducing the out-of-bounds write and subsequent memory corruption that can be leveraged for code execution.
How to fix it
Upgrade com.typesafe.play/play_2.12 to version 2.8.2 or later; verify all transitive dependencies are also updated to patched releases.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed version meets or exceeds the fixed release; review application dependency reports and test that crash-reporting paths no longer permit unauthorized shared-memory modification.
Typical attack path
- Serve malicious content to a vulnerable client or application
- Trigger the content process to interact with crash-reporting shared memory
- Induce out-of-bounds write leading to memory corruption
- Leverage corruption for arbitrary code execution or crash
How to detect it
Review application and framework logs for unexpected crashes or memory-related errors around content-processing paths; correlate with inbound content that exercises crash-reporting code.
What your security team should do
- Immediately update to the fixed version 2.8.2 across all instances
- Scan dependency trees for any remaining vulnerable Play versions
- Monitor for memory-corruption indicators in application logs
- Prioritize patching because of high CVSS and potential for remote exploitation
The record
A content process could have modified shared memory relating to crash reporting information, crash itself, and cause an out-of-bound write. This could have caused memory corruption and a potentially exploitable crash. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 73 and Firefox < ESR68.5.
