What it actually does
Use-after-free memory corruption in the browser engine that can be leveraged for arbitrary code execution when processing specially crafted content.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers can gain full control of affected user systems, enabling theft of credentials, installation of persistent malware, and lateral movement within an organization.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker delivers malicious web content or email that triggers the use-after-free condition during rendering or parsing, corrupting memory to execute attacker-controlled code in the context of the browser process.
How to fix it
Upgrade Firefox to version 81 or later, Firefox ESR to 78.3 or later, and Thunderbird to 78.3 or later. Apply vendor updates as soon as available and verify version numbers post-installation.
How to confirm the fix worked
Query installed browser versions across the environment and confirm they meet or exceed the fixed releases listed in vendor advisories; re-scan after patching to verify absence of vulnerable binaries.
Typical attack path
- Identify users running vulnerable Firefox, Firefox ESR, or Thunderbird versions
- Host or deliver a crafted HTML/JavaScript payload via web page or email attachment
- Trigger memory corruption through use-after-free during content processing
- Achieve arbitrary code execution and establish persistence or exfiltrate data
How to detect it
Review browser crash logs and process memory dumps for signs of unexpected memory corruption; correlate with web proxy or email gateway logs showing access to suspicious domains around the time of any anomalous browser behavior.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching all Firefox, ESR, and Thunderbird instances within the next patch cycle due to remote code execution potential
- Block or sandbox untrusted web content and email attachments for users on legacy versions
- Monitor vendor release channels for any subsequent backports or additional fixes
The record
Mozilla developers reported memory safety bugs present in Firefox 80 and Firefox ESR 78.2. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort some of these could have been exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 81, Thunderbird < 78.3, and Firefox ESR < 78.3.
