What it actually does
Out-of-bounds read in f2fs_xattr_generic_list due to missing bounds check on extended attribute data, allowing disclosure of adjacent kernel memory.
Why it matters to the business
Privileged local processes on Android or Ubuntu systems using f2fs could read kernel memory contents, exposing sensitive data such as encryption keys or credentials on affected devices and servers.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with system-level execution rights prepares a malicious f2fs image or extended attribute structure that omits proper length validation; when the kernel processes the xattr list request, the missing check permits reading beyond allocated buffers into adjacent kernel memory, returning the leaked data to the attacker.
How to fix it
Apply the latest Android security patches or Ubuntu kernel updates that address the f2fs xattr bounds check; rebuild and deploy custom kernels with the fix if using modified Android or Ubuntu images; disable f2fs where not required.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify kernel source contains the bounds check in f2fs_xattr_generic_list; confirm device or system is running a patched kernel build; test with crafted f2fs images to ensure no out-of-bounds read occurs.
Typical attack path
- Obtain system execution privileges on the target device or host
- Create or mount a crafted f2fs filesystem containing malformed extended attributes
- Invoke the xattr list operation via system calls or filesystem utilities
- Read the out-of-bounds kernel memory returned by the vulnerable handler
- Extract useful information such as cryptographic material or process data
How to detect it
Review system logs for unusual f2fs mount or xattr operations initiated by system-privileged processes; inspect kernel crash or audit logs for references to xattr.c or f2fs extended attribute handling around the time of suspected activity.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching Android devices and Ubuntu servers using f2fs filesystems
- Audit internal builds and custom kernels for the vulnerable xattr.c code path
- Restrict untrusted code from obtaining system execution privileges until patched
- Monitor vendor security bulletins for f2fs-related fixes in future updates
The record
In f2fs_xattr_generic_list of xattr.c, there is a possible out of bounds read due to a missing bounds check. This could lead to local information disclosure with System execution privileges needed. User interaction is not required for exploitation.Product: Android. Versions: Android kernel. Android ID: A-120551147.
