What it actually does

The vulnerability permits authenticated users to upload arbitrary files through the login page customization interface without proper validation of file type, content, or destination, enabling placement of executable code on the server.

Why it matters to the business

Successful exploitation can result in remote code execution or unauthorized access to sensitive IT service management data, leading to operational disruption of support workflows, potential ransomware deployment risk, and data breaches; the issue remains in CISA KEV with a remediation deadline long passed, increasing urgency for organizations still running vulnerable versions.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker first obtains low-privileged credentials, authenticates to the ServiceDesk Plus instance, navigates to the login customization settings, and uploads a crafted malicious file such as a web shell; the file is stored on the server and can later be accessed or executed to establish persistence or escalate privileges. Active exploitation has been observed in the wild.

How to fix it

Upgrade Zoho ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus to version 10.0 build 10012 or later. Restrict access to customization features to only trusted administrators, and apply network controls to limit exposure of the application to untrusted networks.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed build number meets or exceeds 10012 via the product about page or version command; review server file system and application logs for any unauthorized uploads or customization changes after the upgrade.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain valid low-privilege user credentials
  2. Authenticate to the ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus web interface
  3. Access the login page customization feature
  4. Upload an arbitrary malicious file (e.g., web shell)
  5. Locate or trigger the uploaded file to achieve code execution

How to detect it

Examine web server and application logs for POST requests to customization endpoints, unexpected file creation events in upload directories, and subsequent access to newly created files with executable extensions; search for indicators of web shell activity such as unusual process spawns or outbound connections following customization changes.

  • POST.*customize.*login
  • ManageEngine/ServiceDesk.*uploads.*\.jsp
  • ManageEngine/ServiceDesk.*uploads.*\.php
  • unexpected executable file creation in customization path
  • access to uploaded file immediately after customization POST

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade to 10.0 build 10012 or newer immediately due to KEV listing and active exploitation
  • Audit and minimize permissions granted to users who can access login customization settings
  • Enable enhanced logging for file upload operations and review them regularly
  • Deploy web application firewall rules to inspect and block suspicious file uploads

The record

Zoho ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus (SDP) before 10.0 build 10012 allows remote attackers to upload arbitrary files via login page customization.
