What it actually does
Flaw in the Security component allows unauthenticated network attackers to read a limited subset of accessible data when Java processes load untrusted code from the internet in sandboxed environments such as Web Start applications or applets.
Why it matters to the business
Older Java deployments that execute sandboxed untrusted code may leak limited sensitive information to remote attackers, increasing data exposure risk on internet-facing or client systems that have not been updated.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with network access identifies a vulnerable Java deployment running affected versions and supplies specially crafted data through supported protocols or APIs to the Security component, bypassing sandbox restrictions under high attack complexity conditions to obtain a subset of readable data.
How to fix it
Upgrade all Oracle JDK and JRE installations to the latest vendor-provided versions that supersede 7u231, 8u221, 11.0.4 and 13; apply equivalent updates to downstream packages in Debian, Ubuntu, openSUSE and other affected distributions; disable or remove sandboxed Java applet and Web Start usage where feasible.
How to confirm the fix worked
Inventory all Java runtimes and confirm versions exceed the listed affected releases; re-test sandboxed application behavior after patching; perform configuration scans to verify removal or isolation of legacy Java deployments.
Typical attack path
- Locate Java SE or Embedded installations on version 7u231, 8u221, 11.0.4 or 13
- Establish network access to the target via multiple supported protocols
- Deliver crafted input that triggers the Security component flaw in a sandboxed context
- Read the limited subset of data exposed by the successful attack
How to detect it
Review network logs and Java process activity for unexpected inbound connections to older Java runtimes; inspect application logs for sandbox violations or unusual data access patterns originating from untrusted code sources.
What your security team should do
- Immediately inventory and prioritize patching of all Java SE and Embedded instances across the environment
- Review and restrict use of sandboxed Java Web Start or applets that load remote untrusted code
- Monitor vendor advisory channels for subsequent Java security updates and schedule regular runtime refreshes
The record
Vulnerability in the Java SE, Java SE Embedded product of Oracle Java SE (component: Security). Supported versions that are affected are Java SE: 7u231, 8u221, 11.0.4 and 13; Java SE Embedded: 8u221. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise Java SE, Java SE Embedded. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized read access to a subset of Java SE, Java SE Embedded accessible data. Note: This vulnerability applies to Java deployments, typically in clients running sandboxed Java Web Start applications or sandboxed Java applets (in Java SE 8), that load and run untrusted code (e.g., code that comes from the internet) and rely on the Java sandbox for security. This vulnerability can also be exploited by using APIs in the specified Component, e.g., through a web service which supplies data to the APIs. CVSS 3.0 Base Score 3.7 (Confidentiality impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N).
