What it actually does
Mounting a crafted f2fs image triggers an unvalidated index into get_seg_entry, causing a slab out-of-bounds read inside f2fs_build_segment_manager and init_min_max_mtime.
Why it matters to the business
Local users or malware can crash systems or read kernel memory by presenting a malicious f2fs image, leading to denial of service, information disclosure, and potential escalation to code execution on unpatched kernels.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker creates a malformed f2fs filesystem image that supplies an invalid segment entry index. When a user or automated process mounts the image, the kernel calls f2fs_build_segment_manager without bounds checking, resulting in an out-of-bounds slab read that can be leveraged for memory disclosure or further exploitation.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing the f2fs segment validation fix (post-5.0.21 stable branches that back-port the get_seg_entry bounds check). Rebuild and reboot all affected systems; disable f2fs module loading where the filesystem is not required.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel version is newer than the vulnerable release and contains the segment.c bounds check. Attempt to mount a known-good f2fs image and confirm no crash or oops occurs; review dmesg for f2fs-related slab errors on test mounts of untrusted images.
Typical attack path
- Craft a malicious f2fs filesystem image with an invalid segment index
- Deliver the image to the target via USB, download, or shared storage
- Trick a user or process into mounting the image (mount command, auto-mount, or file manager)
- Kernel executes f2fs_build_segment_manager with the invalid index, triggering the out-of-bounds read
- Attacker uses the resulting memory read to leak data or chain into additional primitives
How to detect it
Search kernel logs (dmesg, /var/log/kern.log, journalctl) for f2fs slab-out-of-bounds or get_seg_entry warnings around the time of mount operations. Correlate mount events for f2fs with subsequent crashes or unexpected process behavior.

- init_min_max_mtime
- get_seg_entry
- slab-out-of-bounds read
What your security team should do
- Apply the kernel update immediately on all systems that support f2fs
- Add kernel module blacklisting for f2fs on hosts that do not need it
- Restrict unprivileged mount capability via nosuid, nodev and user namespaces
- Monitor EPSS trend and any new exploit code releases for increased urgency
The record
In the Linux kernel 5.0.21, mounting a crafted f2fs filesystem image can lead to slab-out-of-bounds read access in f2fs_build_segment_manager in fs/f2fs/segment.c, related to init_min_max_mtime in fs/f2fs/segment.c (because the second argument to get_seg_entry is not validated).
