What it actually does
CSS sanitizer fails to correctly rewrite @namespace rules when a <style> tag is pasted from clipboard into a rich text editor, enabling injection that can exfiltrate data from certain websites.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers could steal sensitive information from users of affected applications, increasing risk of data breaches and compliance issues; widespread use of the vulnerable component heightens exposure across deployments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker prepares a malicious <style> tag containing a crafted @namespace rule, tricks a user into pasting it into a rich text editor on a vulnerable site, and the sanitizer rewrite flaw allows the injected content to bypass restrictions and leak data.
How to fix it
Upgrade Firefox to version 72 or later and Firefox ESR to 68.4 or later; for sympa update to 6.2.40~dfsg-5 on Debian 11/12/13 or commit 0fa537621ffcdfa9702e2e4cf5ec4807dc6d44cf in sympa-community/sympa GIT.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm installed version meets or exceeds the listed fixed versions; test paste of <style> tag with @namespace rule into rich text editor and verify no unexpected injection occurs.
Typical attack path
- Craft malicious CSS containing @namespace rule inside a <style> tag
- Deliver the payload via clipboard or social engineering to paste into rich text editor
- Trigger sanitizer processing on affected Firefox or sympa instance
- Exploit rewrite error to inject content that exfiltrates data to attacker-controlled endpoint
How to detect it
Search web server and application logs for unusual CSS namespace patterns or unexpected data exfiltration requests following rich text editor activity; review browser or application crash reports tied to style sanitization.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize upgrade of all Firefox and sympa instances to fixed versions within 30 days
- Monitor for any reported exploitation attempts in web or mail application logs
- Review and restrict clipboard paste functionality in rich text editors where possible
The record
When pasting a <style> tag from the clipboard into a rich text editor, the CSS sanitizer incorrectly rewrites a @namespace rule. This could allow for injection into certain types of websites resulting in data exfiltration. This vulnerability affects Firefox ESR < 68.4 and Firefox < 72.
