What it actually does

Authenticated remote attackers can inject malicious SQL via the web UI due to improper validation of SQL values, allowing modification or extraction of database contents and interaction with the underlying operating system.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers with valid credentials could alter network configuration data or extract sensitive information from Cisco SD-WAN deployments, leading to operational disruptions, unauthorized infrastructure access, and compliance risks across widely used affected products.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker authenticates to the vManage web UI, identifies input fields lacking proper sanitization, and submits crafted SQL queries that execute against the database, enabling data manipulation or OS-level actions.

How to fix it

Upgrade Cisco SD-WAN vManage to the latest fixed version recommended in Cisco security advisories for the affected products. Restrict direct web UI access through network controls and enforce least-privilege database accounts.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm current software versions against Cisco release notes, review change logs for database schema or content anomalies, and test input fields in isolated environments for SQL injection resistance.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain valid credentials and authenticate to the vManage web UI
  2. Locate web interface endpoints that accept user-supplied SQL values
  3. Craft and submit malicious SQL payloads to manipulate queries
  4. Extract sensitive data or modify database records, potentially escalating to OS commands

How to detect it

Inspect vManage web access logs for requests containing SQL metacharacters or anomalous query patterns; monitor database logs for unexpected modifications or error responses tied to web UI sessions.

  • SQL keywords such as UNION SELECT or DROP TABLE in vManage HTTP request logs
  • Database error messages referencing syntax issues in web UI audit trails
  • Unexpected changes to SD-WAN configuration tables without corresponding admin activity

What your security team should do

  • Apply available patches to all listed affected Cisco SD-WAN components immediately
  • Segment networks to limit exposure of the vManage web UI
  • Enable enhanced logging of database queries and web requests
  • Perform periodic audits of SD-WAN authentication and query activity

The record

A vulnerability in the web UI of Cisco SD-WAN Solution vManage software could allow an authenticated, remote attacker to conduct SQL injection attacks on an affected system. The vulnerability exists because the web UI improperly validates SQL values. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by authenticating to the application and sending malicious SQL queries to an affected system. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to modify values on, or return values from, the underlying database as well as the operating system.
