What it actually does

Use-after-free condition in the Internet Explorer scripting engine allows memory corruption when handling objects in memory, enabling remote code execution.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can achieve full remote control of affected Windows systems, resulting in data theft, lateral movement, or deployment of malware across enterprise environments. The flaw has been actively exploited in the wild and carries a CISA remediation deadline that has already passed.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious webpage that triggers the use-after-free when the scripting engine processes specific objects; the victim visits the page in Internet Explorer, allowing the attacker to corrupt memory and execute arbitrary code without user interaction beyond browsing.

How to fix it

Apply the latest cumulative updates for Internet Explorer on all supported Windows versions. Disable Internet Explorer where possible and migrate users to Microsoft Edge. Monitor for any remaining instances of the affected scripting engine components.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify that all listed Windows versions have current security updates applied via WSUS or Microsoft Update Catalog; confirm Internet Explorer is no longer the default browser and test that known exploit triggers no longer cause memory corruption.

Typical attack path

  1. Attacker hosts malicious webpage targeting IE scripting engine
  2. Victim browses to the page using vulnerable Internet Explorer
  3. Scripting engine triggers use-after-free during object handling
  4. Memory is corrupted to redirect execution flow
  5. Arbitrary code executes with the privileges of the IE process

How to detect it

Search web proxy and browser history logs for access to suspicious domains around the time of suspected incidents; examine Windows event logs and crash dumps for scripting engine faults on Internet Explorer processes.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately block Internet Explorer usage via Group Policy and enforce Edge or alternative browsers
  • Scan the environment for any remaining unpatched systems listed in affected products
  • Enable enhanced logging for IE process crashes and scripting engine activity
  • Review network perimeter controls to limit outbound traffic from legacy browser processes

The record
