A flaw in older versions of Citrix StoreFront lets attackers read internal files from the server without logging in, which criminals have already used to steal data and launch ransomware attacks.

What it actually does
The flaw permits unauthenticated XML External Entity (XXE) processing in the StoreFront Server's XML handling routines, allowing an attacker to read arbitrary files from the server's filesystem and potentially perform server-side request forgery.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers can steal sensitive configuration data, credentials, or internal network details from affected Citrix StoreFront deployments, enabling further compromise; because the vulnerability is known to be exploited in ransomware campaigns and remains on the CISA KEV list with a past remediation deadline, organizations face elevated risk of data theft and ransomware deployment if unpatched systems are still present.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker sends a specially crafted XML document containing external entity definitions to a Citrix StoreFront endpoint; the server processes the XML without disabling external entity resolution, resolves the attacker's entities, and returns file contents or internal resource data in the response, which threat actors have leveraged in active campaigns against unpatched StoreFront servers.
How to fix it
Upgrade Citrix StoreFront Server to version 1903 or later, 7.15 LTSR CU4 (3.12.4000) or later, or 7.6 LTSR CU8 (3.0.8000) or later; if immediate upgrade is not possible, apply vendor-recommended XML parser hardening or disable unnecessary XML processing features and restrict network access to the StoreFront server.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed StoreFront version meets or exceeds the fixed releases listed above; test by submitting a benign XXE probe that should be rejected and verify that no internal file contents are returned; review server logs for any prior XXE-related parsing events.
Typical attack path
- Identify an exposed Citrix StoreFront Server instance via network scanning or public exposure
- Craft and submit a malicious XML payload containing XXE directives to an XML-accepting endpoint
- Receive server responses that disclose local files or internal resources
- Use obtained information to escalate privileges, move laterally, or deploy ransomware
How to detect it
Review web server and application logs for unusual XML payloads containing DOCTYPE declarations with SYSTEM or PUBLIC entities; search for error messages or responses that include file paths, configuration data, or internal hostnames; correlate with threat actor activity against Citrix StoreFront servers noted in KEV.
- XML payloads containing "<!DOCTYPE" with "SYSTEM" or "file://" entities
- HTTP responses returning server-side file contents such as web.config or boot.ini
- Log entries showing StoreFront XML parser processing external entities
What your security team should do
- Immediately inventory all Citrix StoreFront deployments and prioritize patching of any versions prior to the fixed releases due to active exploitation and ransomware usage
- Apply the appropriate fixed version (1903, 3.12.4000, or 3.0.8000) across the environment
- Implement network segmentation and access controls around StoreFront servers until upgrades are complete
- Monitor for any post-patch indicators of prior compromise using the detection guidance
The record
Citrix StoreFront Server before 1903, 7.15 LTSR before CU4 (3.12.4000), and 7.6 LTSR before CU8 (3.0.8000) allows XXE attacks.
