What it actually does

Heap buffer overflow via unchecked memcpy in PluginTIFF.cpp Load function when processing TIFF files in FreeImage 3.18.0.

Why it matters to the business

Applications handling untrusted image files risk crashes or remote code execution, potentially disrupting services or enabling system compromise; low urgency given age and stable low EPSS.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker supplies a malicious TIFF image to an application using the vulnerable FreeImage library; the TIFF plugin performs an unbounded memcpy leading to heap corruption that can be leveraged for code execution.

How to fix it

Upgrade FreeImage to a version containing the fix; for Alpine v3.10 sudo packages update to 1.8.27-r2 or later.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm FreeImage version is newer than 3.18.0 and test TIFF parsing with known-good and boundary-case files; review package manifests for sudo 1.8.27-r2 on Alpine v3.10.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft a malicious TIFF file exploiting the memcpy bounds issue
  2. Deliver the file to a target application or service that uses FreeImage
  3. Trigger image loading through normal application workflows
  4. Exploit resulting heap overflow for denial of service or code execution

How to detect it

Review application logs for crashes during TIFF image processing; inspect for heap corruption indicators in crash dumps or memory analysis tools; search for unexpected process behavior after image loads.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching any systems still using FreeImage 3.18.0 or older
  • Scan dependency trees for FreeImage usage across the ecosystem
  • Implement input validation or sandboxing around image processing libraries
  • Monitor EPSS and exploit availability trends for any increase in activity

The record

When FreeImage 3.18.0 reads a tiff file, it will be handed to the Load function of the PluginTIFF.cpp file, but a memcpy occurs in which the destination address and the size of the copied data are not considered, resulting in a heap overflow.
