What it actually does
Insufficient input validation in MdeModulePkg allows an unauthenticated physical attacker to trigger privilege escalation, denial of service, or information disclosure within the UEFI firmware environment.
Why it matters to the business
An attacker with brief physical access can compromise system boot integrity, extract firmware secrets, or render hardware inoperable, leading to hardware replacement costs, data exposure, and loss of trust in platform security.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with physical access connects a malicious peripheral or reprograms SPI flash, supplies crafted input to the vulnerable module, bypasses validation checks, and gains elevated firmware privileges to install persistent implants or cause denial of service.
How to fix it
Update Tianocore EDK II to a version containing the input validation fixes for MdeModulePkg; rebuild and reflash platform firmware images incorporating the corrected code; enforce hardware write-protect on SPI flash where possible.
How to confirm the fix worked
Rebuild firmware with the patched EDK II source, verify the vulnerable module no longer accepts malformed input, and confirm platform boot behavior remains stable under physical device attachment tests.
Typical attack path
- Obtain brief physical access to the target system
- Attach a malicious device or modify SPI flash contents
- Trigger the input validation flaw during boot or device initialization
- Escalate to SMM or other privileged firmware code execution
- Install persistent firmware implants or trigger denial of service
How to detect it
Review system event logs and firmware update history for unexpected changes; inspect for signs of physical tampering such as opened chassis or modified SPI flash; correlate with physical access logs.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize firmware updates for all affected Tianocore EDK II platforms
- Enable SPI flash write protection and measured boot features
- Restrict physical access to servers and workstations containing the vulnerable firmware
- Monitor for unexpected boot failures or firmware integrity alerts
The record
Insufficient input validation in MdeModulePkg in EDKII may allow an unauthenticated user to potentially enable escalation of privilege, denial of service and/or information disclosure via physical access.
