What it actually does

Unsafe deserialization in the virtualjdbc extension permits an unauthenticated remote attacker to supply crafted serialized objects that execute arbitrary code under the privileges of the Hybris service account.

Why it matters to the business

Successful exploitation can result in complete takeover of the commerce platform, enabling theft of customer and payment data, defacement, or prolonged unauthorized access; the vulnerability remains actively exploited in the wild with a CISA remediation deadline that has already passed, increasing urgency for any still-exposed instances.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker sends a maliciously crafted serialized Java object over the network to the virtualjdbc endpoint; the server deserializes the object without validation, triggering execution of attacker-supplied code that establishes a foothold with Hybris user rights; known threat actors have leveraged similar deserialization flaws for initial access and subsequent lateral movement or ransomware deployment.

How to fix it

Upgrade the affected SAP Commerce Cloud versions (6.4 through 1905) to the latest supported release that resolves the unsafe deserialization issue in virtualjdbc; if immediate upgrade is not feasible, disable or restrict network access to the virtualjdbc extension and implement strict input validation or a web application firewall rule blocking suspicious serialized payloads.

How to confirm the fix worked

Review the virtualjdbc extension configuration and network exposure; verify that the instance is running a patched release by checking the product version string and confirming removal or hardening of the deserialization code path; re-scan with a deserialization-focused vulnerability scanner after remediation.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify exposed SAP Commerce Cloud instances running the vulnerable virtualjdbc extension
  2. Craft and transmit a malicious serialized object via HTTP or the exposed JDBC interface
  3. Trigger deserialization to achieve remote code execution
  4. Establish persistence or escalate privileges within the Hybris environment
  5. Exfiltrate data, deploy additional payloads, or move laterally

How to detect it

Examine web server and application logs for unexpected serialized Java objects or errors originating from the virtualjdbc extension; look for process executions or file creations under the Hybris service account that coincide with inbound requests to JDBC-related endpoints; correlate with threat intelligence on known SAP Commerce Cloud deserialization campaigns.

  • virtualjdbc
  • Hybris user rights
  • Code Injection via deserialization
  • arbitrary code execution on SAP Commerce Cloud

What your security team should do

  • Treat as priority remediation because the issue is listed in CISA KEV with an expired due date and shows active exploitation
  • Immediately restrict or disable the virtualjdbc extension on all internet-facing instances
  • Apply vendor patches or upgrade to fixed versions as soon as possible
  • Add monitoring for anomalous deserialization activity and review logs for prior exploitation attempts
  • Conduct an inventory of all SAP Commerce Cloud deployments to confirm exposure

The record

Due to unsafe deserialization used in SAP Commerce Cloud (virtualjdbc extension), versions 6.4, 6.5, 6.6, 6.7, 1808, 1811, 1905, it is possible to execute arbitrary code on a target machine with 'Hybris' user rights, resulting in Code Injection.
