Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

A flaw in a widely used database connection tool could let attackers take over computers if they send specially crafted data, so organizations should update the software right away.

What it actually does

Buffer overflow in unicode_to_ansi_copy() within DriverManager/__info.c allows out-of-bounds writes when processing unicode input, leading to memory corruption and potential arbitrary code execution.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers could gain full control of database connectivity layers on affected systems, resulting in data theft, service disruption, or lateral movement; the vulnerability has existed for years with limited observed exploitation.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker supplies specially crafted unicode data to an application using unixODBC, causing the vulnerable function to overflow its buffer during ANSI conversion and overwrite adjacent memory to execute attacker-controlled code.

How to fix it

Upgrade unixODBC to version 2.3.5 or later; rebuild and redeploy any dependent applications after the library update.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify installed unixODBC version is 2.3.5 or newer via package manager or odbcinst -j; recompile applications against the fixed library and test connectivity functions.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify applications or services linking against vulnerable unixODBC versions
  2. Craft malicious unicode input that triggers unicode_to_ansi_copy()
  3. Send input via ODBC API calls or database queries
  4. Achieve memory corruption leading to code execution or denial of service

How to detect it

Examine application logs and ODBC traces for unusual unicode input patterns or crashes in DriverManager/__info.c; review process memory dumps for signs of buffer overflow during info functions.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize inventory of all systems using unixODBC and schedule immediate upgrades to 2.3.5+
  • Monitor for any custom or embedded copies of the library that may bypass package updates
  • Review application code that performs unicode-to-ANSI conversions through ODBC for safer alternatives

The record

In unixODBC before 2.3.5, there is a buffer overflow in the unicode_to_ansi_copy() function in DriverManager/__info.c.
