What it actually does
The flaw in Java SE Libraries permits an unauthenticated network attacker to bypass sandbox restrictions when untrusted code is executed, resulting in full compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability with potential cross-product impact.
Why it matters to the business
Successful exploitation can allow attackers to seize control of systems running untrusted Java applets or Web Start applications, causing data loss, service disruption, and extended recovery efforts; the issue affects widely deployed client environments though servers running only trusted code are not impacted.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker prepares malicious Java code and hosts it for delivery over network protocols; a user must interact with the content (for example by loading a web page containing an applet), triggering the library flaw to escape the sandbox and achieve takeover of the Java SE process.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected Java SE 10 deployments to a patched release; for the listed opensc packages apply the following fixed versions: opensc (Debian:11) 0.19.0~rc1-1, opensc (Debian:12) 0.19.0~rc1-1, opensc (Debian:13) 0.19.0~rc1-1, opensc/opensc (GIT) 360e95d45ac4123255a4c796db96337f332160ad, opensc (Debian:10) 0.19.0~rc1-1.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm Java SE has been updated beyond version 10 and test that untrusted applets no longer trigger the described compromise; verify package versions match the listed fixed releases for any opensc components present in the environment.
Typical attack path
- Prepare and host malicious Java code targeting the Libraries subcomponent
- Lure a user into loading the code via Java Web Start or applet over network protocols
- Exploit the sandbox bypass during execution requiring user interaction
- Achieve code execution and full compromise of the Java SE instance with potential lateral impact
How to detect it
Review web proxy, browser, and Java deployment logs for unexpected applet or Web Start launches from external sources; examine process execution records for Java instances spawning unusual child processes after user interaction with network content.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching all Java SE 10 client deployments that execute untrusted code
- Disable or restrict Java Web Start and applet execution for untrusted sources until updates are applied
- Monitor for any future EPSS increases given the current low but rising trend
- Apply the exact fixed package versions listed for opensc across Debian 10-13 and GIT builds
The record
Vulnerability in the Java SE component of Oracle Java SE (subcomponent: Libraries). The supported version that is affected is Java SE: 10. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise Java SE. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker and while the vulnerability is in Java SE, attacks may significantly impact additional products. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in takeover of Java SE. Note: This vulnerability applies to Java deployments, typically in clients running sandboxed Java Web Start applications or sandboxed Java applets, that load and run untrusted code (e.g., code that comes from the internet) and rely on the Java sandbox for security. This vulnerability does not apply to Java deployments, typically in servers, that load and run only trusted code (e.g., code installed by an administrator). CVSS 3.0 Base Score 8.3 (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H).
