What it actually does
The flaw resides in the Java Security subcomponent and permits an unauthenticated network attacker to bypass authorization checks, resulting in unauthorized creation, deletion, or modification of critical data plus read access to all data accessible to the Java process.
Why it matters to the business
Organizations running affected Java deployments face risk of data tampering or theft that can disrupt operations, expose sensitive information, and require incident response even though exploitation is difficult.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with network reachability supplies crafted data to Java APIs or through sandboxed applets/Web Start applications; the security bypass allows the attacker to read, modify, or delete data without authentication or user interaction.
How to fix it
Upgrade all affected Oracle JDK, JRE, and JRockit installations to the latest vendor-supplied security releases; apply equivalent updates through Red Hat, Canonical, or HP channels where those distributions are used; disable unnecessary network-exposed Java services and sandboxed applet support until patches are applied.
How to confirm the fix worked
Inventory Java installations and compare versions against the April 2018 Critical Patch Update; re-test affected services after upgrade to confirm the security checks now enforce proper authorization boundaries.
Typical attack path
- Map exposed Java SE, Embedded, or JRockit instances reachable over supported protocols
- Identify entry points such as web services, RMI, or applet delivery channels
- Craft and transmit malicious payloads that trigger the authorization flaw
- Escalate to read or write operations on application data stores
- Exfiltrate or alter critical data without leaving authenticated sessions
How to detect it
Review Java process logs, RMI or JMX audit trails, and web-service access logs for anomalous unauthenticated requests that result in data-modification operations; correlate with file or database change events that lack corresponding authenticated sessions.
What your security team should do
- Treat Java updates as high priority given the data-integrity impact and broad downstream usage
- Remove or restrict network exposure of Java RMI, JMX, and applet endpoints
- Implement application-layer controls that validate authorization independently of the Java runtime
- Monitor EPSS trend and revisit exploit maturity signals on a monthly basis
The record
Vulnerability in the Java SE, Java SE Embedded, JRockit component of Oracle Java SE (subcomponent: Security). Supported versions that are affected are Java SE: 6u181, 7u161 and 8u152; Java SE Embedded: 8u152; JRockit: R28.3.17. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise Java SE, Java SE Embedded, JRockit. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized creation, deletion or modification access to critical data or all Java SE, Java SE Embedded, JRockit accessible data as well as unauthorized access to critical data or complete access to all Java SE, Java SE Embedded, JRockit accessible data. Note: Applies to client and server deployment of Java. This vulnerability can be exploited through sandboxed Java Web Start applications and sandboxed Java applets. It can also be exploited by supplying data to APIs in the specified Component without using sandboxed Java Web Start applications or sandboxed Java applets, such as through a web service. CVSS 3.0 Base Score 7.4 (Confidentiality and Integrity impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N).
