What it actually does

The flaw permits an authenticated user to bypass authentication controls and directly execute arbitrary code on the QRadar SIEM appliance.

Why it matters to the business

Compromise of the central security monitoring platform can expose the entire organization's visibility into threats, enable persistent attacker presence, and lead to data exfiltration or operational disruption; the issue remains unpatched in listed versions with weaponized exploits publicly available.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker who obtains low-privileged access sends specially crafted requests that evade authentication checks, gaining the ability to run operating-system commands and install further tools; public weaponized exploits have been available since shortly after disclosure.

How to fix it

Upgrade affected IBM QRadar SIEM installations to a supported release that contains the vendor fix; restrict network access to the management interface until upgrades are complete.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed version is newer than 7.3 and test that the previously vulnerable endpoints now enforce authentication; re-scan with the vendor's security checklist or equivalent configuration audit.

Typical attack path

  1. Locate an exposed IBM QRadar SIEM 7.2 or 7.3 instance
  2. Obtain or guess low-privileged credentials
  3. Submit authentication-bypass HTTP requests to the management interface
  4. Escalate to arbitrary code execution
  5. Establish persistence and move laterally into monitored environments

How to detect it

Search SIEM and appliance logs for unexpected authentication-success events immediately followed by code-execution indicators; examine process-creation and web-access logs for anomalies on the management interface.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade of all QRadar instances to a fixed release
  • Place the SIEM management interface behind additional access controls and VPN
  • Monitor for anomalous command execution or unexpected processes on the appliance
  • Review logs for indicators of prior bypass attempts given the high EPSS score and weaponized exploit availability

The record

IBM Security QRadar SIEM 7.2 and 7.3 could allow a user to bypass authentication which could lead to code execution. IBM X-Force ID: 138824.
